I am just one of many from A. O. Smith who knew John through the years and admired his kindness, intelligence and enthusiasm. Better than anyone I know, John represents the technology and innovation that made A. O. Smith Automotive great for over a hundred years. My heartfelt sympathy to his family and many close friends.

I wish I could be with everyone today as you mourn the loss of a great man and celebrate John's life, his accomplishments and recount how he touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with during his 78 years on earth. John was a special man, from your first meeting where he took a Polaroid picture of you and stapled it to your business card to the hours spent after work solving the world's problems, and talking about the latest Mac developments or how we could solve a customer welding issue.
John touched my life and demonstrated that it is possible to flourish in the business world with honesty and integrity. He provided a role model that would mentor a whole new generation of Engineers and Businessmen leaving behind a number of people that were impacted by John. I am sure he will look down and watch over all of us, ensuring his legacy is in place for years to come.

We were happy to share Dinner with John & Patti at our home on Friday March 30th. As John wrote back to me:
"Hello David and Peggy,
This is just a quick E-mail to say Special Thanks for the Friday dinner at your house. We enjoyed visiting with both of you. We hope our visit didn't put too much stress on both of you. David, did you get enough sleep before going to work early on Saturday morning? "
Typical John, always concerned about those around him. His philosophy of "people make the difference" made him and those he touched successful in life.

Patti we were very sad to hear the news on Tuesday night! It was great that we got to see John last Wednesday night, I just wish I could have poured him a glass of Merlot - "Smoking Loon" and let him indulge in a great sugary dessert! Our path in life could have been very different if it wasn't for John! Our Thoughts are with you and your family during this sad time.

Liz and Wayne offer their sincere condolences to Patti and her family.
John was an absolute gentleman, he was a visionary technologist and not afraid to commit himself to big technical adventures. A founder of Friction Stir Link he influenced marine ship building history. John lived to see the results of his work with the contribution that he and his team made towards the building of the Littoral Combat Ship the USS Freedom. Liz and I were fortunate to have met both Patti and John and shared some wonderful times with such a devoted couple over many years. Our thoughts are with you all
