Just heard about Joe's passing tonight. Met Joe at UW Stevens Point 40 years ago. An outstanding athlete but more important, an outstanding person. RIP Joe.
November 4, 2016
I just heard about the passing of Joe and I'm shocked to say the least. Although I did not know Joe personally, we competed against each other in high school, I'm from Tosa West. The few times we talked I always enjoyed his company. He's the type of guy I wish I could have been a team mate with as he always seemed to bring out the best in his team mates. I'm extremely sorry for the Zuba families loss and I pray he's with Jesus and I can meet up with him again someday. My prayers are with you. All I can say is I'm reminded of this...If you could talk to Joe and ask him to come back, he would respond, "I'm good here, I'll wait for you to join me." Take comfort he's in a much better place. Gods Blessing, Pete Bonert

My condolences to the Zuba family.
Personally, I cannot say I knew Joe Zuba, but as high school athlete he was the "best" I have ever seen. As a Tosa West alum, I hated to see him show up for the game because I knew his presence would make the difference. However, I could not help to admire his skill on the athletic field and always wish he were on my team. His confidence, his swagger and his ability gave me confidence on the athletic field. He was one of a kind!
I agree with Kris Campion, he was one of the best athletes ever at Tosa East and in the entire Suburban Conference!
Thanks for the memories, Joe.
My heartfelt condolences to the Zuba family

I was able to make the services this past friday. All I can think of is how proud Joe would be of his children. They were fantastic in summing up how truly special he was. Joe was a family friend to the entire Boyle family. I knew him virtually all my life and was still playing basketball with him well into our 30s. This past week has been an avalanche of memories. One that keeps popping in my head is one from our grade school days. Summer evenings Joe would regularly come to our house to hang out. He would always time it so he was pulling in as we were ending dinner. Well we celebrate five family birthdays during summer. Joe would just belly up to the table and join us singing happy birthday. He became such a welcome participant we would wait to light the candles if he was running late. Just another feel good Zubes story. I was proud and inspired to hear Joe somehow maintained that wonderful positive energy until the end. I came away thinking if I could just aspire to live my life as positive as Joe I could make the world a better place and carry on Joe's wonderful spirit. We loved ya Joe!

Truly an exceptional athlete but beyond that an exceptional human being. The world is just not as bright without him in it. God bless him and his family. We were lucky to have known him.

I was sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I was a fellow classmate of his graduating class at Tosa East and when you thought of your classmates, his name always stood out. He was a great athlete and we wish the Zuba family comfort at this time.

Memories of Joe immediately flash on his contagious smile and laugh, the sincerity of his friendship, and his amazing athleticism. He exemplified everything embodied in a true Tosa East Raider and young man. There was something exceptional about his energy and enthusiasm, and he pulled so many towards him because of it. I will always remember sitting in the Commons at East HS with a common free time. There were about twenty of us, and Joe took a bet that he couldn't make a backwards shot seated from about fifteen feet using balled up paper. He made it....and about eight more! Magical! Thanks for sharing all that you did while you were here, with those who had the gift of time with you Joe!

When my brother John told my brothers and me of Joe's passing-it was very sad news. I will always remember him for his great smile and bouncy walk through the halls of Tosa East. As one of the best athletes ever at East he made going to games some of my best high school memories. My deepest sympathies to his family. God Bless

My deepest sympathies to the entire Zuba family. I was between Joe and John in grade school and high school and spent a lot of time at the Zuba house as a youngster. Everyone at St. Pius X and Tosa East marveled at Joe's exploits in the athletic arena. More importantly, Joe was a sincere, compassionate human being who always had a smile on his face and treated everyone with respect. Joe left us too early, but he will be remembered fondly.
God bless,

My mom called today & told me the sad news about my old friend. Its hard to believe, I remember Joe as larger than life. No matter what sport or game he played , he would be the best at it. My memories are from younger times, Bills basement playing bumper pool listening to Supertramp & Beatles Rubber Soul. Everybody like Joe, he was a fun guy to be around. My thoughts & prayers are with his family.

Johnny: I will never forget playing football in your backyard with Joey as all-time qb and I rammed my foot into a pipe and as I lay there crying, he came up to me and said (I remember this like it was yesterday), "Hey should I call a toe truck?" which completely alleviated my suffering! So sorry about your loss. -Terry Mulert

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was the quintessential stud athlete. He was 5 years older and in my brother, Parry's, grade. I don't remember ever having to be talked into going to see one of their games- if Joe was playing, you knew something amazing could happen at any moment. He made an entire generation of younger kids spend much more time on the drive way or field, trying to emulate what we saw him do so easily. When you came up to talk to him- full of awe at the end of the game, Joe would laugh it off and talk to you as if YOU were the most important kid in the room. What an great combination of athleticism, humility, and good humor!
The Zuba family has been well thought of in the Cartier family's life from St. Pius to Longfellow to East and beyond. We feel so blessed to have the Zubas in our lives. We will all miss Joe terribly. Peace to you all in this difficult time.

We will miss ya Joe Kid!
A few things I will always remember about ya.
When together with him and the buds at some of our favorite taverns and the song came on the juke box "Everybody Dance Now" by the American Dance Band he would sing out at the top of his lungs EVERYBODY DANCE NOW.
No one was better at the moonwalk except maybe Michael Jackson.
When together at Genks annual golf outing he would come all the waaaay from Cedarburg to New Berlin or Pewaukee and we would pick up just like we talked yesterday as great friends. Pretty special.
You guys are starting a pretty powerful infield with Joe Kid at short, Genk at 3rd, and Petey at 1st.
There will be many laughs and smiles at the celebration when we start telling Joey stories. Ones we will never forget.
You were pretty special Joe Kid.
Sweet Sweet Memories!
Love ya Joe Kid.

Joe was a great friend to see. He would always flash his warm smile and give me a man hug. Joe gave so much, to so many people and all he asked for was your friendship and a few kind words. I am very saddened by his passing. I will pray for Joe, his family and friends. Not only was Joe a great husband, father and friend, to so many people, but he was also the best dancer I ever shared the floor with.. I tried to mimic his moves, but they were never like Joe's. My deepest sympathy to all of the Zuba family.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of Joe -- just a wonderful guy who played a part in many of his Tosa friends' best memories. Many thoughts and prayers go out to his family, my deepest condolences.

To the Zuba Family. I knew Joe for over 40 years. We grew up in Tosa together, although he was part of the (north of North avenue) Pius gang along with the Boyle's I never held it against him. Ha! Sports brought us together beginning with our pick up basketball games and strike out at Washington, and of course the famous Turkey Bowls (we made that name popular before anyone else did) played at Elmers Memorial Field in the heart of the Washington Highlands. I will venture to say I took the field with Joe well over 500 times as we not only played as kids but we played softball and basketball until we were 40 or so. Joe was the best athlete I have ever been around, he could do it all. My top three memories are the circus shot he made against Tosa West when he was going to be called for 3 seconds in the lane so he took the pass and just tossed it over his head and banked it in!! He also returned a punt against West Allis hale to give them their only loss of the year, and finally winning the league title in softball in Tosa. Joe never had a bad word for anyone!! He was a true friend that would do anything for you. I did not see him much after we stopped playing but I knew he loved his family "BIG Time" and was so very proud of them. He would explode with excitement when we would catch up on our families. I also know Joe loved his Lord, he was a wonderful Christian ambassador that led boldly by example. I know for sure Heaven is a much Happier place with Joe there!! May his memories live in your heart forever!! Pete Monfre
