My father, Larry Grassel was an amazingly smart man who played hard and worked hard, without complaining. He was constantly searching for more knowledge. Lawrence was gifted with an unusually strong body which seldom got sick or broke down. His real job was as a pharmacist, often working 90 hours a week, only to come home and rototill his garden in the dark before going to bed, or put on a new exhaust system on his car in the driveway during a snow storm, without hat or gloves.
In his spare time he excelled at everything he did. He was a runner, bowler, archer, scuba diver, trumpeter, vocalist, auto mechanic, swimmer, biker, farmer, skier (water and snow), ice skater, carpenter, fisherman, electrician and more. Watching him was like going to technical school. He was unusually good at sharpshooting with his 22 rifle.
When I was 3 years old, he got a chain saw and cut a doorway from my bedroom to the bathroom so I wouldn't have to walk out in the cold hallway.
When I was 8 years old, we went ice skating at McCarty Park. Other people would clear the rink, while Dad gave a virtuoso skating exhibition, spinning and jumping through the air to applause. People would come up to me and say is he your dad? Wow!
When he was 60 and I was 30, we went running at the Eagles Club. After a half hour, I was exhausted and sat down only to watch him continue running laps for another hour.
It was great fun watching him ride a bicycle backwards, standing up.
In his 70s, he finished a triathalon and put a new roof on his house.
I never heard him say anything was difficult. He would just work at it until he got the desired result and study with expert teachers.
If he needed something, he built it. If something was broken he fixed it.
I received his guidance and expertise for 67 and a half years. I've missed him the last 12 days. I half expect him to open the casket, jump out and ask where his running shoes are and when the next Packer game is.
