JOHN DAW Obituary

Feb. 12, 1927 - Oct. 31, 2010 John Lawrence Daw, 83, passed away October 31, 2010. The rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, followed by visitation until 7 p.m. at Visitation Church, 5141 Main Street, Kansas City, Mo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday, at the church. Interment will be Saturday, Nov. 6, at Violet Hills Cemetery, Perry, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions made to The University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556-5612 John was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa, to John Francis and Ruth Lawrence Daw and grew up in Perry, Iowa. He received his Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame. John served in the US Army during WWII, and served in the Civil Engineering Corps for the U.S. Naval Reserve for 40 years, retiring as a Captain in 2000. During his tenure, he was Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Construction Battalion (Seabees) in St. Joseph, Mo., from 1961-1967. He also served as a Blue and Gold Officer for the US Naval Academy for over 32 years. John moved to Kansas City and began his career, of 51 years, in Architectural Design with his firm, John Lawrence Daw and Associates. During his career, John received numerous architectural design awards including the AIA Citation Award of Excellence for the UMB Drive-In Bank in Overland Park; Urban Design Award by the Municipal Arts Commission for the Cathedral Square Apartments in Kansas City; an Honor Award Medal by AIA-Kansas City and an Award of Excellence by the Midwest Concrete Association for Brush Creek Towers in Kansas City; Medal of Award by AIA Kansas City for Vista Del Rio Apartments Kansas City; Medal of Award by AIA Kansas City for the Doctor's Clinic in Kansas City, and a Lincoln Foundation Award for its creative design with structural steel for the Headquarters of Hudson Oil Company, Kansas City. He also formed a partnership with a former Notre Dame classmate in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1970 to create the firm Castiello Y Daw and later the Planen firm which provided architectural services in Mexico. Projects in Mexico included various religious projects, industrial and pharmaceutical factories, urban planning and environmental architectural/engineering. John was a member of Visitation Church, and served on numerous civic commissions and boards including: Kansas City Municipal Art Commission; Ozanam Home for Boys; Real Estate Board of Kansas City; Lakemary Center Board of Trustees; Notre Dame Club of Kansas City; Rockhurst University, Honorary Director; University Club of Kansas City; Chairman of the White House Conference of Aging (1971); as well as being an Adjunct Professor of Design for the University of Kansas in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design for two years. He was appointed by President John F. Kennedy to the Design Consultant to the Public Housing Administration (HUD) from 1961-1965. John was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward F. Daw, M.D. He is survived by his wife, Alberta James Daw; children, Mary Kathleen Daw of Omaha, Neb., Deirdre Daw of Memphis, Tenn., Brigid D. Hall and husband, James, IV of Salina, Kan., Sean P. Daw and wife Anne Ise of Grayslake, Ill., Megan D. Arquette and husband Nick of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, James Hall, V, John L. Hall, Lily Bix-Daw, Maeve A. Daw, Els H. Daw, Delilah R.
