ROBERT POWERS Obituary

George Robert (Bob) Powers, M.D., 79, of Kansas City, KS, passed away, Dec. 5, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Joyce Lyn Powers. Dr. Powers was born Sept. 17, 1933 in Great Bend, KS, to Alva and Golda Powers. He grew up on a farm in Rozel, KS, earned his Eagle Scout in 1949, and graduated from Rozel High School in 1951. He served as lieutenant in the 64th Fighter Squadron in the United States Navy from 1954-1958 as a pilot aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. Dr. Powers graduated from Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, in 1960, where he was president of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School in 1965 and practiced family medicine in Kansas City, KS, from 1965 until 2012. He took care of thousands of patients over the years and was voted 'Best Doctor in Wyandotte County' numerous times throughout his career. He taught the joy and art of the practice of medicine to many other doctors and nurse practitioners. Dr. Powers was a lifetime member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and member of the Southwest Clinical Society. He served as a staff physician at Providence Medical Center and Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Dr. Powers was instrumental in establishing Heartland Primary Care, whose current building at 2040 Hutton Rd in Kansas City, KS, is dedicated in his honor. He was a current board member of the Country Club Bank, member of the Business West, and previously served on the board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City. He was an active member of Trinity Community Church. He had a zest for life and enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, fishing, hunting, and camping. He cherished his leisure time with his wife, Joyce, at their vacation home in Sun Lakes, AZ. Dr. Powers proudly identified himself as a farmer throughout his life. He and Joyce, along with their children and grandchildren, worked together on their farms in Greeley County, Rush County, and Pawnee County in Kansas and Kiowa County in Colorado. Through farming, he instilled the importance of hard, meaningful work and family values to his children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Dr. Powers is survived by his children, Jill Fearing, J.D. (Greg) Flower Mound, TX; Mark Powers (Julie), Kansas City, MO; Jane Powers, Kansas City, MO; David Max Powers, Somerset, CO; the mother of his four children, Dorolyn Potts, Coppell, TX; Kathy Davis, Shawnee, KS; Karen Miyawaki (Edison), Kansas City, MO; Karol Davis, M.D. (Brian Couch), Shawnee, KS; and John Davis (Dana), Basehor, KS; and two cousins, Booker Cox (Carolyn) Blue Eye, MO, and Ruth Beard (Jim), Neosho, MO. He is survived by 27 grandchildren to whom he was so dedicated and of whom he was so proud. He recently became a great-grandfather to three. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff and physicians at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Select Specialty Hospital, and Providence Medical Center for the compassion and kindness shown to the patriarch of our family at the end of his life. Many of his caregivers knew him as a colleague and friend. Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 10 from 5-8 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave in Kansas City, KS. To the family of Bob Powers I am saddened to hear of the loss of a true patriot. I first met Bob in VF-64 at Alameda. He took two of my sons and I on a fishing trip to Yosemite that they will always remember.

Wish I found Bob sooner as I organized our first VF-64 Fighter Squadron Reunion in 2006 at Monterey CA. Bob was a very well liked Navy Fighter Pilot back in 1956-58 at NAS ALAMEDA. We searched but couldn't find him and I knew his first name was George but we all called him Bob. Regrets to hear of his passing. Bob Keep Flying Up High in Your F2H BANSHEE. RIP

I am saddened to hear the loss of a great Physician. Dr. Powers was my Physician for many years, we had some great conversations while visiting at his office. He always took care of my medical needs. He talked a lot about his farming. I really didn't see Dr. Powers as just as my Physician, he was a good friend and I know he will be missed by thousands. RIP, Dr.Powers

After running a tractor out of fuel in Lacrosse,Ks Doc chewed my butt. He said"Gosh darn it your not a tractor driver your an operator and operator checks his gauges and doesn't let this happen." I've never ran out of fuel again over 30 yrs later and I've ran a lot of equipment since then. Doc was a father to me and made me a better person.

It was a privilege to work with Dr. Powers for the limited amount of time that I have been at Heartland. He was loved by so many people. I was so surprised at how many people were on a first name basis with him and how they always asked (right when they walked in) how "Bob" was doing. The office has grown so much but Dr. Powers as well as the other doctors always made it that small hometown feel. I am lucky to have worked with him, not as closely as others but I have my own memories that will stay with me. He meant a lot to the community as well as my family for personal reasons. Thank you Dr. Powers and I know you are giving out free medical advice up there even if nobody needs it. The office will never be the same.

Sorry for the loss of Dr. Powers. He was a super doctor for me to have known all the past years. As I worked for K.C. Ambulance Service 1604 Minnesota Ave. KCK and later owned my own ambulance service Metro located at 940 Central Ave. KCK I got to see Dr. Powers a lot at the local hospitals and also he would give ambulance calls for people going to or from the hospital. God bless him and the family.

If there ever was a legend for a Doctor, that would be this wonderful man. I don't think anyone in Kansas City didn't know him at least by name but most by being his patient at some time or another. I can truly say this community has lost a great man first and a great Dr. second. That was how Dr. Power's was! A compassionate person/doctor who truly cared about people. Obviously, his compassion shows by him still being a Doctor this year when he could have retired years ago and left everyone behind but, not good ole Dr. Powie! You will be missed and never forgotten. Love to all the family from the Koontz Family!

Dr. Powers was one of the finest doctors I ever met. He was concerned not only from a doctor/patient standpoint, but as two fellow human beings working together to solve the problems at hand. He was a doctor 24 hours a day and never complained when called at home when needed. Even in death he will always be remembered for his compassion for others. God bless you Doc, I feel like I've lost a friend. See you some day in Paradise my friend.
