DONALD LIPOVAC Obituary

April 3, 1935 - April 26, 2014 On Saturday, April 26, 2014, the area lost the man once described as a " cultural treasure" by the Kansas Art Council when he was named artist in residence in the Kansas City, KS school system. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM, Thursday, May 1, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 274 Orchard St., KC,KS. Burial in Mt Calvary Cemetery. Visitation 5 to 8 PM, Wednesday, April 30 at Holy Family Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Holy Family Church. Don was born April 3, 1935 to Anthony Joseph and Agnes Julia (Mayerle) Lipovac and was a lifelong area resident. His career in music started in childhood playing Slovenian songs on the button accordion that his grandfather used to sing. Through classical training he developed into a renowned accordion artist winning the national virtuoso competition at Carnegie Hall in 1958, going on to represent the United States in the world competition in Brussels, Belgium. Don studied the piano accordion under Alfred Vacca of Kansas City, MO and earned degrees in music theory and music education at the Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He taught accordion students both privately and at the Vacca School of Accordion. He also gave solo concerts around the country and performed as a soloist with the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. Don leaves a great legacy in his home town where he developed a deep appreciation and love for the folk music of his Slovene and Croatian neighborhood that extended to the other ethnic groups. Inspired by the international folk concerts of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, he became an expert in folk music with the hope and intent of preserving their music and cultural heritage. He taught and directed over 200 students of St. John's School Tamburitza orchestra, and with the constant help of his wife, JoAnn, led them over 25 years in concerts travelling and in making records. For this accomplishment, he was inducted into the Tamburitza Hall of Fame. The Don Lipovac Polka Band and their records are well known and appreciated around the world. Don's Polka style was inspired by his friend, Frank Yankovic. The band became frequent performers at local events and festivals around the country. Their popularity has earned recognition and induction in the National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame and Iron World USA Polka Hall of Fame in Chisholm, MN. Locally the group became so popular a booster club was formed to add support and travel with them to out of town events. That loyalty lasted for over 30 years. Don is known to other audiences for his more contemporary solo performances, as a member of combos at social events, local clubs and restaurants, notably the Alameda Plaza Rooftop Restaurant and Italian Gardens. Don graduated from Wyandotte High School and the Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He served his country in the US Army. He was an organist and lifelong member of the Holy Family Catholic Church as well as a member of the American Slovenian Catholic Union (KSKJ) Lodge, St. Martin's Croatian Fraternal Union, and the American Federation of Musicians Union. Preceding him in death were his parents and niece, Janet Bernstein. Surviving is his beloved wife of 52 years, JoAnn (Yocuis) Lipovac, his brother, James Eugene Lipovac, sister, Agnes Phelps (Don), two nieces, Laura Krzyzanowski (Bill), and Donna Coldren (Jeffrey), also five great nephews. I cannot believe it has been 6 years since Don has left us. I still believe that a part of the Slovenian heritage and history is gone with Don's passing. May he continue to pray for us and play for all those in his heavenly polka club.

DON LIPOVAC
Don was something else: a great accordionist and a great musician who could play (well) a variety of musical instruments, including stringed instruments and the CLARINET. He could even do choreography and could arrange parts for a tamburitza orchestra. And he was the most HUMBLE person you could ever meet. He could play the accordion both classical and ethnic music with such expression, such emotion, and such gentleness. Don was a marvelous musician, a good man, a good friend and a great ping-pong player! He is sorely missed and will always be remembered. May he rest in peace.

Joann & Lipovac Family-

All though it has been several years since I last spoke to Don and to you Joann, Don and his great music and fine band will always share a special place in my heart. I remember all the great events and polkafests we attended over the years where Don and his band were featured performers. There was no other musicain ever like Don. Many, Many times myself and many others stood in front of the band stand just absolutly amazed at the Band's perfoemance, but best of all is when Don would do some solo selections, we were so amazed and stunned on how well Don performed on the accordion. The accordion was really one with Don and he was one with the accordion, it was a part of his wonderful heart.

Don never ever had a bad word or ill feeling towards anyone ever. He always spoke highly of others and they spoke highly of him. Don always made time for others. There were many musicains that would hardly give you the time of day, Don was never like that. He treated people with dignity and respect always.

I will never forget all the places we traveled and saw Don and his band there and he was always number one on our list to see. From my home city and state, Denver, CO and NM, KS, UT, CA, ND, SD, IL, MN, OH, PA, WI, IN and the list goes on. He was a hero to me and I looked up to him when I was a very young kid just learning the accordion. He was truly the master of his universe. He will be deeply missed, I am saddened to think that he is not with us anymore but his music and his legacy will live on forever. I will miss you Don Lipovac, peace and goodwill to you now and always. Joann and family my thoughts and prayers are with you always.

I still can't believe you are gone my friend. Although we rarely got to see each other, your music, humility andlove for your art has always and will continue to inspire me. Rip don and peace to you Joann.

May 4, 2014

What can you say about Don that's not already been said? A Musical Genius and a very HUMBLE man. He never bragged about himself. He could play and teach you to play numerous instruments, including clarinet (which he played in high school), piano accordion, button box, piano, organ, stringed instruments, to name a few. He was a master musician AND a master teacher, who was very patient and diplomatic in his teaching.
Don had two Master's degrees and played an Aaron Copeland composition with the Kansas City Symphony. He composed arrangements for stringed orchestras and could teach folk dancing. He leaves a legacy of over 200 musicians he taught with the St. John's Tamburitzans.
Don shared his many talents with us for many years. At least we have his CD's to play to remind us of the many times he entertained us. We are very saddened by his departure. May God bless this wonderful man. May he rest in peace.
Sincerely, Johnny Soptick, Accordionist

I am a 20 year transplant to KCK. When I heard Don play at Holy Family I was transported to the days of my youth traveling to see family in central Kansas. Those radio waves full of polka shows, the dances in tiny town halls... I knew KCK would be a fine home when I heard Don play. All blessings on his family, and my thanks to all who keep the culture alive.

Joann - Loretta and I send our very best thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I have said for years that one of the most difficult jobs I have played as a percussionist, was not in a band, an orchestra or chamber ensemble, but playing with Don Lipovac. I thought I was going to get to skate for the evening - no way. I will remember him for the rest of my days. A nice, generous man and an extraordinary musician. RIP Don - you WILL be missed...I value the recordings more now than ever.

Don was a Kansas City treasure! He preserved the integrity of the accordion as a versatile and respected musical instrument and he was considered the master of the accordion by everyone that knew him and heard him perform. He leaves a void in the musical community that will be impossible to fill.

May 1, 2014

Don Lipovac was one of those rare, outstanding individuals whose contributions to our cultural lives tower above those of almost anyone else of his time. He could do amazing things with his accordions, with tremendous versatility, masterfully playing a wide range of folk, ethnic, popular and classical music. But even more, Don was an incredibly kind, generous and giving person. He did not just play music for money, but played and worked to share and preserve the rich and beautiful Eastern European cultural heritage throughout the area, region, and anywhere else he could go. His passion and love for this music and heritage was unsurpassed, and it showed in his playing and his tireless efforts to enrich the cultural life of our communities.

We are all so fortunate to have had the great opportunity to listen and dance to Don's wonderful music, and the music of his polka band and the St. John's Tamburitzans. We will all dearly miss Don.

I will never forget when I attended grade school at St. Peter's School. Some of my favorite moments involved the days that he would come and do his cultural presentations for the school. He would showcase his music, teach us traditional dances as well as he had small accordions for the students to play. He would teach us basic scales and things. The interaction with Mr. Lipovac really touched my life and fueled my interest in learning about other cultures through the arts. I still follow polka music to this day. A good friend of mine played for the Brave Combo for several years and we have had several conversations about how Don has inspired many musicians. He will be missed but will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to his family.

The best gift we ever gave our dad, Tony Kolich, was a private concert in his home by his idol, Don Lipovac, on Father's Day shortly before he passed away. And we were so very grateful that Don's recordings were able to soothe Dad in his last days as he battled cancer and Alzheimers. Our sincere thanks to Don, JoAnn and band members for all the wonderful memories. It's hard to imagine special events without those sweet, unmistakable sounds. May he rest in peace.

He is responsible for many cherished memories of my family sharing special & wonderful times playing with the St John's Tamburitzans. Mom & Dad's proudest moments was seeing their kids in concert. Thank you JoAnn for always being there for us kids along with Don. Your & Don's dedication will always be appreciated. Don will be missed by many.
With deepest sympathy JoAnn & family.

JoAnn,
I am so sorry. I was so fortunate to have been able to perform with Don. He was a remarkable musician but he was much more than playing notes in his head making his accordion sing and sound like a chorus. He was a kind, warm, and gentle man who gave to others so much love and enjoyment. I will miss him but I know that he will still be making beautiful music with the angels in heaven and they will smile. You will be in my prayers. Del Sutton

I grew up listening to Mr. Lipovac's music. Wonderful man. He will be missed.

Don has marked "passages" for so much of my life...he played for several of Louise's birthdays, for IDIMO parties, and, most touchingly, at my mother's visitation, where he played the songs she used to sing at the USO and the music she would always request of him during quiet nights at Grecian Gardens when there were few customers and she and he would remember old songs together. He will be so missed.

So sorry to hear of Don's passing. I held him in the highest regard as a master accordionist, as well as a true gentleman. Always enjoyed hearing him, as well as the chance to visit when our paths crossed. My sincere condolences to JoAnn and the family. Rest in Peace, Jeff Winard

I have known Don all of my life as a mentor and great friend to my big brother, John. As John has always said, "Don was a musical genius." I have always enjoyed his music as very many others have. Not only was he a great artist, but a true gentleman, and friend to many. He will be missed. I look forward to hearing him play again in heaven.
Sincerely,
Tom Soptick
