JAMES NEIL "JIMMY" BOND

JAMES BOND Obituary

James "Jimmy" Neil Bond, 57, Osage City, Kan., passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Kansas City. Jimmy was born on Dec. 6, 1953, in Topeka, Kan., the son of Clyde and Josephine Plake Bond. He spent his early life in Osage City before moving to Lawrence and graduating from Lawrence High School. He spent most of his life in the Kansas City area before moving back to Osage City in 2009. Jimmy was a commercial artist and musician. After graduating from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree Jim found success working for several companies in the Kansas City area and independently, winning several awards and his art work displayed in art museums in Omaha, Neb., and Springfield, Mo. In recent years he would find appreciation for his sketchings. Learning to sing at a very early age Jim would sing for clubs and organizations in his home town of Osage City. Then when in Junior High School he and friends would form their first band, The Vikings. The Vikings and later The Emperials would play for local dances in and around the area. Later, after some changes, they would then call themselves The Rain and would expand out to other areas in the Midwest. Beginning in 1971 he would perform with Plain Jane, being accomplished playing many different instruments, his strength would however remain with his vocal ability. This band went through personnel and style changes, but were always one the hottest bands around. Based in Topeka, Manhattan, and Kansas City over about a decade, they were led by Jimmy and appeared on the soundtrack of the movie "Zapped." After the band disbanded, Jimmy became a founding member of KC's very successful Liverpool, a Beatles tribute band, until his health forced him to drop out a few years ago. Jimmy was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in February, 2010 with Plain Jane. Survivors include a son, Billy Reiling and wife Allison, Olathe; a brother, Tom Bond and wife Becky, Troy; three grandchildren, Will Reiling, Adrienne Reiling and Aubrey Reiling; a niece, Jane McCarthey and husband Justin, St. Joseph, Mo.; and two nephews, Chris Bond and wife Michelle, Karney, Neb., and Pete Bond and wife Deanna, Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Bond. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City. The family will receive friends an hour before service time at the funeral chapel. Inurnment will be at Washington Creek Cemetery, northeast of Overbrook. Memorial contributions can be made to James Neil Bond Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral home at 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, KS 66523.

I knew Jimmy during the Kansas State University days. I will always remember him being very unique but kind and caring. Loved his art and really never knew him as a musician. I will always remember our time together with all of our friends talking about art. I am very sad to have learned of his death, but I know he is still rocking on!

To Jimmy's family, my sincere sympathies and prayers are with you. I met Jimmy when I was 18. The moment I heard him I fell in love with him. His simple smile and that voice could brighten up anyone. Wish I could have known he was sick, but I know he's in a better place now. I will always remember Jimmy fondly with alot of love and respect. I truly miss you Jimmy.....

To Jimmy's family - my deepest sympathies. I met Jimmy in 1981 and we spent a lot of time chatting as I was an immigrant from Cape Town South Africa. Having travelled a bit Jimmy was always interested in my stories. What a talent. I remember telling Jimmy at one concert that he did some of the Beatles songs better than the Beatles themselves! What a wonderful soul. I had not spoken to Jimmy in many years but have fond memories. RIP brother...

Well Jimmy, today's the day. I've thought of you constantly since the 10th. I've thought of all the joy you brought to me and thousands of other music lovers across the Midwest by simply singing a song, and I wanted to say thanks.
I can't remember exactly when or where I first heard you but it had to be at the Block during the mid 70's. To walk into a local club and see and hear someone with your talent was indescribably wonderful, especially if you were a musician.
In a world filled with hyperbole, to call you great seems a little understated. But you were great, as great as i've ever seen anywhere. Any venue-One Block West, the Windjammer, the Pladium, Brothers, the Lone Star, Arrowhead Stadium, Sandstone, Cowtown Ballroom, Memorial Hall, Anywhere.
So farewell Jimmy, and thanks for the memories. I was there and I got to witness greatness firsthand. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends.

I met Jimmy while playing on the Kansas City circuit back around 1980 and found that we had so much in common. Such a soulful singer with the voice of an angel and a spirit to match. I was lucky enough to sit in with Plain Jane whenever I was lucky enough to cross paths and will forever cherish those wonderful memories. I'm sure that they are lining up in heaven to hear this newest arrival... love ya brother.

I remember you well, Jimmy, from my days at the Windjammer. You were a friend and a great talent and a gracious gentleman. You and Rick and Jeff and Steve, and Randy - you were the best that we ever had in those days. Thank you for all you were, and all you gave us.

The five years I spent working with Jim and the rest of the guys in Plain Jane provided me with some of my most cherished lifelong memories. While the news of Jim's passing was heartbreaking, it has been a joy to reconnect with Steve, Jeff, Rick, Ron and Scott over the past week. We have shared many favorite Plain Jane stories via phone and e-mail. I know Jim would have had a ball reliving each and every one of them with us. Beyond Jim's incredible talent, passion and creativity, he was among the most humble, loyal, charming and compassionate people I have ever known. His spirit will continue to live on within all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

I had the privilege of growing up with Jim in Osage City and watched his artistic and musical abilities blossom throughout our school years. Later I was in several bands with him from The Imperials to Plain Jane. He was one of the most unpretentious, funny, talented, and gregarious people I have ever known. The memories created with Jim and others during our musical years will last a lifetime. I'm sorry you left us so soon, but will cherish the good moments...and there were many. Tom and Becky, you are in my thoughts and prayers as we remember Jim's life and all that he gave us.

Jim was one of the coolest men I've ever had the chance to work with...Playing, entertaining, colaborating with him & the other guys in Plain Jane will forever be one of my deepest treasures in this world!
I pray Jim's got more musical instruments, audio gear, painting & drawing gear to create his fantastic art for our Creator & the folks in the next dimension. And when it's my turn, I hope I get to sample some of it...
My sincere condolences go to Tom & Becky!

Plane Jane and Liverpool played at my brother's holiday party every year, and they were always a blast. Favorite Jimmy story - one year I asked for a set of songs by dead musicians and Jimmy was all over it. Dude even did a Patsy Cline song and nailed it! So talented, fun-loving and kind, Jimmy will be missed. Enjoy your "Garden Party," Jimmy.

It was my great pleasure and honor to have known Jimmy from the days of One Block West, starting in 1978. I was overwhelmed with the amount of talent the man had, and during my college years at Penn Valley Community College I made every attempt to get Plain Jane's music on the college radio station. Several years passed until 1990 when I took on the job of assisting Liverpool as their guitar tech and stage manager. Jimmy took the band artistically to levels that seemed unattainable. Certain renditions of Jimmy singing "Let It Be", "The Long and Winding Road", and "Yesterday" still fill me with great emotion and pride when I think about him. Jimmy will always have a place in my heart for what his talent brought to me as a co-worker, the entire Liverpool brotherhood, as well as the tens of thousands of fans that got to hear him play and sing over the years. My condolences go out to Jimmy's family.

I'm so grateful I had a chance to reconnect with Jimmy this past NYE in Lawrence, hug him, tell him thank you for all the years of incredible music & friendship and see that smile in his eyes one more time.

Several years ago he played drums and sang some background vocals on the Kinetics album in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and we had such a great time working in the studio and hanging out. I've had so many good times listening to him play and laughing with him, as have so many of us.

There truly will never be another one like Jimmy. He is deeply appreciated, sorely missed and loved.

Each and every time I saw Jimmy it was an event! His band Plain Jane stood out as an excellent example of great entertainment at the local clubs..led by his smoke tinged vocals. It was always a treat to share road stories with him. I have missed his singing for years since my work took me from Kansas and always hoped to hear him again. Jimmie RIP.

Plain Jane was my all-time favorite band that played at One Block West. Jimmy's musical talent and stage presence were huge. He also was amazing as Paul in Liverpool. If Jimmy enjoyed making music as much as we enjoyed hearing it, then he had a wonderful life. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.

My heart has been filled with such extreme sorrow since hearing of the passing of our dear friend Jimmy Bond. What an amazing, rare, talent. He was so kind, personable, and humble. Not a pretentious bone in his body. This is such an enormous loss. My heartfelt condolences are offered to his family and friends.

My brother Ray (Raphael) and I played with Jimmy along with Owen Evans and Ron Hall in Plain Jane Version One from the fall of 1970 thru the fall of 1972. We shared the first floor apartment at 818 Bluemont in Manhattan, KS with Jimmy and Ron. I have countless good memories of those times.

Ray and I saw Jimmy a few years ago in Santa Monica, CA on his way to Australia with his family. We spent several hours together. It was great to see him again. I have many photos & videos of that event which I will treasure for the rest of my life.

During the time of the Plain Jane induction into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in March of 2010, we reconnected with Jimmy and spoke often on the phone.

I would like to say something to Jimmy directly. I’d like to think he can hear me:

My dear Jimmy,
We miss you very much, my friend and artistic brother. May the Lord Jesus guide you to heaven where you can sing for God.
Amen

Jim was gracious enough to be my date to my Jr Prom, when he was a freshman, because I needed one. He was always fun to be with throughout high school. His music was his life then, and from what I have read, has continued to be throught his lifetime. I wish his family the kind of peace that he gave to so many others through music and friendship.
