REED HICKOK Obituary

Reed Wells Hickok, 45, of Mission Hills, Kansas, passed away April 1, 2010, at home with his family by his side. Reed was born on September 22, 1964, in Kansas City, the second son of Dorothy Ann Reed Hickok (D'Ann) and John Dible Hickok, Sr. He grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Pembroke Country Day School in 1983, having made lifelong friends through his dedication to Glee Club, football, wrestling, and track. He followed his older brother John, Jr., to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, where they were both members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Reed graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1988, but not before he met the love of his life, Anne Marie Nicolaou of Dallas, Texas. They were married in 1992 and were blessed with two daughters, Sophia Grace. Reed, a real estate developer, took great joy in raising his daughters with Anne. He also supported the Ronald McDonald House, Kemper Museum, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Children's Mercy Hospital, Turning Point, and The Pembroke Hill School. He was a member of the Architectural Review Board of Mission Hills and was to receive the Pembroke Hill School Distinguished Alumni Award this May. An avid cyclist who rode with Tomahawk Cycling, Reed conquered the Copper Triangle and the Triple Bypass rides in the mountains of Colorado. Reed was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and will be remembered by all as a person of unflagging integrity who treasured his family and respected people of all walks of life. Reed's courageous fight over the years was testament to his tremendous energy and drive and his determination to live each moment of his life to the fullest. Anne and her family would like to thank the staff of St. Luke's Hospital, Mayo Clinic Rochester, and all the attending nurses and physicians for their compassion while tending to Reed's needs during his illness. Reed was preceded in death by his parents, D'Ann and Jack Hickok. He leaves his wife Anne, daughters Sophie, brother John, sister-in-law Lisa and their daughter Ericka Schubert, aunt and uncle Gloria and Bill Hickok, cousins Tim Hickok and family, and Anne Hickok McCartney and family, all of the Kansas City area; parents-in-law Katherine and Jim Nicolaou, and sister and brother-in-law Stephanie and Justin Husman and their daughter Anna of the Dallas, Texas, area. Reed also leaves numerous friends who have been a constant source of love and support during his long illness. Memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace in Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to FAP Research Fund at Missouri Bank and Trust, PO Box 26430, Kansas City, MO 64196 or Pembroke Hill School, 400 W. 51st, Kansas City, MO 64112. I had the pleasure of getting to know Reed on various bike rides in KC over the past 18 months. So I didn't know Reed particularly long or all that well, but I will tell you that I did know the person that I see remembered and honored in these posts. What you saw is what you got with Reed and the more you talked with him the more you liked him. We talked about a lot of stuff while on the bike and I was struck by the grace and courage that he displayed in dealing with his serious health issues.

What a fine example of living in the present and making the most of the time you have.

It was an honor and a privilege to have known Reed and I hope that his family finds comfort and solace in the outpouring of love and support that you have received and in the wonderful memories that you all must have of your time with Reed. My deepest sympathies and condolences to you during this difficult time.

Love never dies!

Reed always told me he was the most blessed man on earth- that every day he woke up, he said it was so good to be "Reed Hickok" and that he could not want for anything more than he already had. I have lost my friend and "spiritual advisor" and all of us have lost a beautiful soul. Prayers for Anne, and Sophie, we will keep you in our hearts.

What an honor and priviledge it was for myself and all the staff of the 5th floor at St. Luke's to have cared for Reed....he was our hero, mascot, goodwill ambassador and all around good guy. Hugs to Ann, and Sophie....we loved and miss him, too.

Reed was one of the first people I met at T.C.U. I can remember how he truly loved that snake he had! He was a very kind and gentle soul...had a certain sparkle in his eyes. I can remember thinking (from the very first time I saw them together) that he and Anne were the perfect match; they just went together. Deepest sympathy to Anne and their family. I am truly sorry for your great loss. God Bless.

We have lost a true gentleman, an outstanding family man and a dear friend. To a life well lived and one in which will be remembered in so many wonderful ways. I never will forget those spring day bike rides a year ago this spring, Reed. I will always remember when we last saw each other you said you hated goodbyes. I look forward to the day we ride again and I am most certain you'll have an outstanding route in god’s country. May peace be with you and you’re family. Know your spirit will be carried throughout each and every one of us that you have touched and leave behind. God bless you and your family.
RIP Reed.

Reed and I rode the Triple Bypass last summer, while his brother, John,SAGed for us. Reed had never been stronger. He passed most riders on the hills and the only thing that kept him back was waiting for me. He had acheived so much and was so strong - no one would have ever quessed that he would not return. He was the toughest guy I've ever known. I'm going to miss him very, very much.

Reed seemed to have it all. He was a kind, considerate person who liked all and all liked him. He had a beautiful wife and two beautiful daughters. He was accomplished in his profession - and everything else he sought to do. Which makes it all the more sad that it was all taken away from him - and he was taken away from us - at the age of just 45. He will forever be in our hearts. / Caryn and Rob Mandel
