Sammie Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2007.
Guard soldier, 19, dies in Iraq FRANKFORT -- A 19-year-old Kentucky National Guard soldier died Monday in Iraq when his vehicle overturned during a mission.

The crash that killed Pfc. Sammie E. Phillips of Vine Grove also injured two other Kentucky guardsmen, military officials said yesterday.

The injured soldiers were not identified.

Phillips' unit commander, Capt. Robert S. Mattingly, said Phillips was "an excellent soldier who had unlimited potential."

"I never met a person that didn't like Sammie Phillips," Mattingly said.

Laura McGray, a former teacher and assistant principal at North Hardin High School, remembered the 2006 graduate. "He was an outgoing young man and was always ready to help someone," she told The News-Enterprise of Elizabethtown. "He would go out of his way to help someone."

Phillips was assigned to Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery, based in Carlisle. He joined the Kentucky Army National Guard last year and deployed with his unit last month.

Phillips is survived by his wife, Ashley; his mother and stepfather, Rachel D. and Donnie Crutcher; and his father, Ronald E. Phillips.

Kentucky's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Donald C. Storm, said Phillips was riding in a military vehicle headed to a traffic control point when a civilian vehicle swerved into its path. The military vehicle took "evasive action," struck a culvert and overturned, he said.

Funeral arrangements for Phillips are pending.

Phillips was the 16th Kentucky guardsman killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

He was the third Kentucky guardsman to die in about two weeks.

Staff Sgt. Nicholas Carnes died Aug. 26 during a firefight in Afghanistan, and Staff Sgt. Delmar White died Sept. 1 in Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded.

We might not have been the best friends but we were friends nevertheless. Not a Memorial Day goes by where I don't think about you and what you have done for our country. I was saddened when I received the news but I know you are in much better place now. R.I.P Sammie

Sammie,

So in a few short days, another year will have passed. I've gone through my share of people, asking them if the pain ever subsides...they all gave me the same answer, NEVER. I wanted to send a little note on the 10th, but I'm not so sure that my heart will be strong enough to face you on that day. It's crazy how everyday, I miss you more and more. Ya know, people ask me, why did you join the Army...and I remember you, and share your story. You are truly my inspiration and will forever be my hero. I'm sure you're throwin' a party the angels ain't ever experienced, I love you buddy and can't wait to see you again!

In Memory of Sammie ~ (Debra Estep)

September 10, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Sammie, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I will always remember the day the unit left for Iraq. I was standing in the airport crying my eyes out because my man was leaving for a year, to go to unknown fate. I was running to get one last look at my soldier walking through the checkpoint as I saw a young couple holding each other with tears in their eyes as well. I knew what they were going through and thought that it had to be much harder for them being so young. I reached out to them and told the young soldier that he had many people who would watch out for him and bring him home safe. His wife looked at me and said thank you. I went on my way to find my soldier. I did not know that I was talking to Sammie at the time until I saw his picture in the paper. I cried so hard for him and his family and knowing the words I had spoken to him didn't come true. I know that he was a brave soldier and he helped keep my man safe. For that I will always be thankful. Rest in Peace Sammie, and always know that your National Guard family will never forget your sacrifice.

PFC Marcus Polarchy

February 7, 2008

Sam-Bo, I'm missing you too much. I remember opening the Army Times and seeing your last name, but being afraid to look at the picture. It couldn't be true; what was I to do. This strong man whom I've grown to love was gone. Sammie I know we had this tough image, but the way me and you were and the things we shared, I cried. I can't stop crying Sammie for you touched me and still do. I have tears in my eyes as I write this. First, I want to thank you for coming into my life. Me and you were inseperable. When you got smoked, I got smoked. I love you so much. You were young in age, but so wise in mind. I was attached to you for your spirit, motivation, and desire to be better than the rest. If it wasn't for you I don't know how I would've made it through. You motivated me everyday and drove me to be the best that I could be. Sammie I remember all the times we shared and things that we endoured. I remember your mother and wife sending Hanes underwear and T-shirts filled with candy. I remember you and your blisters with your winter boots! I remember you showing me how to get people back for snoring at night. I was the big brother, but you showed so much potential that it felt like we were the same age. I remember the nights we had duty when you would write home to your wife, mother, and little brother. How I tried to convince you to go active so we could always be together. How we use to get the company smoked because they wouldn't shut up. How you always were my battle buddy no matter the cause. How we packed those extra weights in our rucks only to throw them away in the field! Sammie I have so many memories of the time that we shared. The things that stick out to me the most are your wonderful smile that could light up a room, the way respect was given no matter your age, and how we bonded and grew to be brothers. Sammie I regret not coming to Ratcliffe to see you before I went to Korea. Man it hurts me so bad. I wish I could talk to you and laugh like we use to. I think about you daily and have your pictures in my room. I'll never forget you Sammie as you touched my heart like no one has ever done. I talk about you often and never forget my friend. You are the one who changed me and I'll never forget. The tears and the heartache will never go away. As I google you and youtube you. These things will be pushed back though as I remember the good times, your words of encouragement, and your wonderful smile. SAMMIE I LOVE YOU! Never will I forget, but always remember the things you've done and the motivating force to make me push through. Sammie Phillips you are my inspiration and my hero. Your battle buddy forever. Sammie thank you and watch over me for I'll never forget you or the things we endured I love you.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Keep the faith. Didn't know him but Thank you!

October 13, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I want to say that I send my condolences. My name is PFC Maldonado. I wasn't close to Sammy or anything, but I sure do remember him. We went to bootcamp together at Ft. Jackson. I never knew Sammie personaly. His wife Ashley and I going in the same college, we was together in one of the classes and have a group presentation. Ashley is great young and bright women ,who was so proud and in love with Sammie. She share there wedding pictures which just happen in may of this year. She was so scared and worry for him going on deployment, but did not show her fear ,instead she bravely, calmly and kindly commune with other sudents.I'm much older and have a son ,who just 20 and enlisted and just got married..Her loss broke our hearts, its became our loss,Sammie's bright and brief life -great example of our youth, our Country, our price for Freedom. My heart goes to Ashley,Ashley and Sammie families.
Ashley! We love you at ATA,we cry and pray for You and Family ,our deepest symphaties.Forever in my heart and prayers.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Private First Class Phillips. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!

I know Sammie because he is my brother Tony's best friend. He was Sammie's best man at his wedding just a couple of months ago. I have wonderful memories of Sammie at my parents house. Him and my brother would sit around and watch movies and lift weights. They love eating top ramen noodles with hot sauce. LOl! Tony and Sammie would wrestle and chase eachother all around. My brother would call him "Vato" and they saw eachother every single day. I talk to my brother today and he says he could never imagine have another best friend. He says it just wouldn't feel right. My heart aches for Sammie and the family. I know my family is really feeling this loss-my dad loved Sammie. When Tony got yelled at so did Sammie. It was sort of funny how my family very easily added sammie to our own family. He was expected to come over every day....Sammie- the Gonzalez family loves you and we all miss you. Say hi to my grandmother who's with the lord- she will guide you and keep you safe.

Sammie...HERO..just one word to explain who you are to our community, friends and family. In your short life you made a difference in so many lives. The kids at school have nothing but happy memories of frienships and fun times they shared with you. I can't imagine the pain your wife, Ashley and parents, Donnie and Rachel are going through along with your brothers and sister and the rest of your family. It is faith in God that will get them through it. It may be the end of your life here on earth but your eternal life has just begun! Dear Sammie, we know you will be watching over everyone from above and will be waiting for your loved ones when their time has come. Take care of your grand dad up there. I remember the cute little boy playing in the pool. Thanks for giving all you had to make our country a better place to live!

To the family of PFC Phillips, please accept our heartfelt condolences. Such a fine young hero taken from us to stand a greater watch with God. You must be so proud of his significance. Know that we will never forget Sammie and his sacrifices even though we've never met him. What an honor it will be to ride for Sammie with the Patriot Guard Riders.
