Alexander Raye Obituary

KINSTON - Mr. Alexander Raye, Jr., 81, of 815 Eagle Road, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Alexander was born in Kinston, N.C. to the late Alexan-der and Martha Raye. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Paul Raye; sister Esther Raye; grandmother Mrs. Martha Raye; and an aunt, Ms. Anna M. Raye. Alexander attended elementary and high schools in Kinston, N.C., graduating from Adkin High School in 1948. He furthered his education at Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C., and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, N.C. His post graduate studies were completed in Administration and Supervision from North Caro-lina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, N.C. He was honorably dis-charged from the United States Army after two years of service. He was a retired Assistant Principal with the Wayne County Public School System. His community affiliations were the H.V. Brown School Masters' Organization, Winston-Salem State University Alumni Associa-tion, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In addition to his community affiliations, he was an active member of St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as the Church School Superintendent for close to 30 years, as well as membership of the Church Steward Board and Methodist Men. Alexander leaves to mourn and cherish his memory, a devoted wife of 46 years, Joyce Holmes Raye; son Alexander Raye, III (Jacquelyn) of Norfolk, Va.; daughters Jennifer Joy Raye of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Kimberly Alice Raye of Bartlett, Ill.; grandsons Chavis Alexander and Bryson Alexander Raye; two sister-in-laws, Marian H. Bass of High Point, N.C., and Melba McCannon of Landover, Md.; a number of nieces and nephews; very dear friends, Mrs. Rosetta Cox and Theodore (Teddy) Washington of Kinston, N.C., and several other friends with whom he formed meaningful and lasting relationships. He shared special fondness for his extended family, Beatrice Olds (Willie) of Kinston, N.C.; grandson Willie, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughters Rhonda W. Olds of Kinston, N.C., and Lemisha T. Olds of Fayetteville, N.C.; and great-granddaughter, Ericka Olds of Kinston, N.C. "The Omega Omega Ceremony" will be held at 1:30 p.m., prior to the beginning of the fu-neral service. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2008, at St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion Church, Kinston, N.C., with the Rev. Julian C. Pridgen officiating. Interment will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion Church School. Funeral arrangements by Albritton-Carraway Funeral Home. Mr. Raye will be dearly missed by me of course. Ever since I first met Mr. Raye at Belks he has always been very friendly to me and alot of times got me out of sad and sappy moods. He always had a great sense of humor. I remember him telling me that everytime I gave him a hug, I added 20 years to his life. I could go for one of those hugs now! My prayers are with this family.
