SYBIL FIELDS Obituary
FIELDS, SYBIL GENEVIEVE EUGENIE JOHNSON - died Monday, May 7, after a brief illness at Country Care Manor in La Vernia Texas at age 92. Sybil was born in Scotsguard Sask., Canada on June 1, 1919 to Henry and Emma Johnson. Sybil enjoyed a happy childhood while attending the one room school house in Scotsgard through high school. As a young woman, she moved to Quebec, Montreal, Canada and earned her RN from Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. That year, she met and married Theron J. Fields. Sybil worked as a nurse while Theron attended Wesleyan University in Middletown , Connecticut. When they began their family, Sybil became a full time mother and homemaker. She relished the role and became an excellent interior decorator, gardener and accomplished hostess. They moved to Toronto, Ontario Canada and Ithaca, New York where Theron worked for Shell Oil Co. and returned to his education at Cornell University eventually earning his PhD. In 1963, Sybil, Theron and their three children, moved to Norris, Tennessee. Theron began a career with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Sybil embraced community service including neighborhood chairman and troop leader of the Girl Scouts, leader of the Cub Scouts, and volunteer for Head Start, Planned Parenthood and Good Neighbors. She was precinct chairman of the Democratic Party in Anderson County, and frequently served as officer of the day during elections. Sybil was also an active member of the PTA and Band Boosters. A favorite activity was her Wednesday night bridge club in Norris. Sybil and family were members of the Norris Religious Fellowship Church. Sybil served as treasurer for the Woman's Fellowship for decades, Sunday school teacher and member and chairman of numerous committees over the years. After Theron retired, they traveled frequently with life-long friends, joined President Jimmy Carter's Friendship Force, traveling to Russia to foster better relations with the Russian people. She moved to Floresville Texas to live with her daughter, Sonja, and son-in-law, Michael Kellett, in Aug 2005. Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, Henry P. Johnson and Emma Bergh Johnson, her brother, Odell Johnson, all of Scotsguard, Sask.; and her husband, Dr. Theron J. Fields. She is survived by her children, and children-in-law, Bart and wife Helena Fields of Sugarland, TX, daughter Sonja and husband Michael Kellett of Floresville, TX, and son Eric and Teresa Fields of Maryville, TN. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Lauren Fields and Brandon Fields of Sugarland, TX, and Abbie Fields and Bradley Fields of Maryville, TN. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Rachael and the entire staff of the Country Care Manor Nursing Home, for their wonderful care during her final days. A memorial service is planned at the Fellowship Church in Norris later this year.
