I second those who commented on Phil's kindheartedness and sense of humor. He was very welcoming when I first got to ORNL. Phil always had an open office when one wanted to vent (and solicit advice) about an unsuccessful proposal. But I'd like to highlight especially Phil's attention and devotion to mentoring and seeking recognition for deserving colleagues. The letters of support that he wrote for scientists, mentees, and support staff at ORNL showed a great deal of knowledge of skills and impact and also caring, respect, and keen observation. I will miss Phil.

I had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Phil on the Oak Ridge Field Research Center (FRC). Phil unlike the rest of us had a youthful exuberance and love for Science that did not fade. The energy he brought to the FRC and focus on Science is what made it successful. I miss the passionate discussions on all the cool experiments we could do and did do. I guess the highlight was when the film crew for Modern Marvels showed up at the FRC with Phil in a starring role. Phil's selflessness was also memorable. Several times I was shocked to find he had put my name first on a paper. Although he clearly had contributed more, he valued my contribution more than his own. Thinking of Phil also brings a smile to my face and the word "Mischievous" comes to mind for some reason. My condolences to Phil's family. He will be greatly missed.

No matter what the conversation he was always genuinely interested in you and what you had to say. My deepest and sincerest condolences to his family and friends. I can't help laughing when I think of Phil. He would literally bounce along the hallway here at work. And- a special bond-- he was the first to see my daughter Elizabeth when we adopted her-- he was volunteering at Children's Hospital that afternoon. He knew how to share and spread smiles. Still does, for me.

I met Phil due to his "rogue" paper recycling program, started for ESD before there was a recycling program at ORNL. So typical of Phil... he just saw the right thing to do and made it happen. What a passionate, kind, brilliant, and humble person he was. I can't believe he has left us at such an early age. He is missed and his memory will always be an inspiration.

My condolences to the Jardine family. Phil was such a tremendous scientist. It was fun to see him work out solutions to challenging science questions. And, the accolades and awards during his career were testaments to his creativity. But, more importantly, he was a terrific team member and mentor to others. His humility and acknowledgements to others was one of his great strengths. Even more important, he was simply a really nice person. It saddens me that the Lord chose to take him early. I agree with Chris Schadt that Phil has been missed these last few years from ORNL.

I have enjoyed knowing Dr. Phil for going on ten years and also looked forward to seeing him. He had an infectious smile and was easy to talk to. He was always interested in talking about science but was hesitant to talk about his own. His humility was very evident and certainly a huge part of his charm.
God took him way too early from us and we will miss him greatly. We can only trust in His plan and know that Dr. Phil is at peace and in God's loving arms.
