Richard Holmes Obituary

Richard Holmes

Knoxville, TN

Richard Arthur Holmes, Jr. (aka Rick), born in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 21, 1936 to Clara Sams-Holmes and Richard Arthurs Holmes, Sr. He grew up with his sister Eleanor Sylvia and received his early education in Knoxville. Richard served in the United States Navy and then moved to Los Angeles, California where he was employed at the US Postal Service, while attending Don Martin School of Broadcasting. He was a member of Holman Methodist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. James Lawson, Jr., a pastor and civil rights activist. After graduating from Don Martin he began his professional radio career at KBCA Radio 105.1 FM, in Los Angeles, a Mount Wilson Broadcasting Jazz station owned by Saul Levine. His show became very popular and was coined "Rick's Affair," with his theme song "Poinciana," an arrangement by Ahmad Jamal. This resonated with many listeners in the evening time slot. As was his style, he closed his show with quotes and poetry by Orson Welles. Richard was employed at KBCA from 1967 until 1976. In 1970 he married Ellinore Harris and from this union in 1975 he received the greatest joy of his life, the birth of his daughter Clarissa Amber Holmes. Based on these events, he changed the name of his show to "Rick's Family Affair." Richard furthered his career in broadcasting at KJLH 103.2 FM owned by the great Stevie Wonder, in another evening time slot as "Holmes in your Home." He continued to educate his listening audience about the music genre of Jazz and the exemplary talents of Jazz musicians. One of the banner ads on his show was the adorable voice of his daughter, Amber, who at four years old sang the Radio station jingle with so much bravado that many were impressed and overjoyed. He received many phone calls to play her version of the station song. Rick was a radio personality, Master of Ceremonies, an Actor, and a spoken word recording artist. He worked with Ruth Dolphin at Dolphins of Hollywood, and Dooto's Records in South Central Los Angeles. After leaving KJLH, Richard returned to Knoxville to spend time with his beloved mother. There he became a member of the Payne Avenue Church, in which he served in many capacities. He married again and settled down to enjoy his wife and family.

Rick was preceded in death by his wife Tiny; parents, Richard and Clara Holmes; stepfather, Hubert Rucker; sister, Eleanor Holmes Jones and nephew, Timothy Lee Jones. Richard Arthur Holmes, Jr. leaves to cherish his memory; his daughter, Clarissa Garrett of Los Angeles, California; brother-in-law, Thomas Jones of Chicago, Illinois; nephews, Thomas Jones, Jr. and Gregory Jones of Chicago, Illinois, Angela Jones, San Francisco, California and a host of cousins, great nieces, nephews and many close friends.

Family will receive friends, 1:00-1:30 p.m., Saturday at Payne Avenue Baptist Church; celebration of life, 1:30 p.m., Rev. Richard S. Brown, officiating. Arrangements by Jarnigan & Son Mortury. www.jarnigansmortuary.com

I began to listen to KBCA 105 FM, in 1961. I have so many wonderful memories of listening to Rick Holmes, during the 70's, followed by Jai Rich. And then to have the opportunity and honor to work with both of them, at KJLH 102.3 FM, during the 80's...What a special time!
I remember the time Sarah Vaughn came to the station
(KJLH), and Rick interviewed her on his evening show.
Rick was the first person I knew who owned a Mercedes! Rick and Jai, truly made the 70's and 80's musically FUN every-week day, listening to them on radio, with their presentation, knowledge, passion, and love for their audiences. I was fortunate to speak with Rick a year before he transitioned. He still had it!
God's Love and Richest Blessings,
Eleanor

Rick Holmes’ poetic avenue for bringing great music into the homes of tens of thousands of fervent listeners was instrumental for a young 12 year old to enjoy the likes of Cannonball, Gene, Dexter, Roy and Barry. Streets, Melba, Stephanie, Carmen, Nancy and Ella. I even enjoyed The Moody Blues. It encouraged my quest to broadcast and eventually work in a radio station that you worked at but unfortunately, you left before my arrival. It would have been a cathartic dream to absorb your knowledge and grow from your experiences. I’ve learned anyway from your recordings and I’ve Remembered to Remember and keep alive you and those legendary examples that positively impacted our culture. Rest On Beyond The Peace Of All Mortal Understandings.

A diet of Rick A Tick for dinner and Jamming Jai Rich for late nite dessert while listening to KBCA 105.1 on our LA FM radio dial filled my soul & spirit with a mixture of jazz, r&b and information that left me thirsty to drink from the well of flowing waters of life. There will never be a duplicate time in radio ever again.

Thanks to GetGlenn56 for setting me straight on Fantastic, That's You. It's Oliver Nelson with Phil Woods. Great to hear it again.

Rick had an opening theme on KBCA, Fantastic That's You by Hank Crawford, but I can't find that song on any of Crawford's albums. Does anyone know where Crawford's recording can be found?

As I cruised up 17 the Nimitz thru Oakland Ca. I heard a very familiar voice coming off that little station on the bay KDIA. When I got to I-80 I took a detour. The voice was nun other than my brother-in-law Rick Holmes! He gave me a tour of the station, and I was so proud to have him in No. Calif. All my friends started catchin' him on the way to parties in the bay area. Rick.... your little bro will miss you. May God Bless the Tenn. family, in their time of sorrow ...Til we all meet again. RIP

Richard "Rick" Holmes was a great friend. He always had a smile and a joke for me. Oh, the times we laughed together at Payne Ave. I will miss his laughter, his jokes, listening to his stories about his life as a DJ and life in LA. My deepest sympathies to his daughter Amber who I heard many stories about and to the rest of his family. Richard was loved and always had love for others. I'm blessed that he touched my life:

Rick, many of us only scratched the surface in getting to know you. But you were composed of so many more interesting levels that many of us now wish we had slowed down and taken the time to enjoy and absorb. Those lucky ones who knew you when and now tell your multi-story levels are fortunate! RIP Rick Holmes.

Rick Holmes was a musical genius. He could hear the spirit of a piece of music that others could not hear. Once, I received a dozen red roses from Rick and the card said "Thank you for being a human being." That was a great compliment. I will always remember the hours of laughter, the spirit of love he had for everyone and the deep pain and sadness he felt in the suffering of others..

Recently I had found myself wondering where is Rick Holmes. I was an avid listener of KBCA/KKGO and you brought so much to the jazz world. I had the pleasure of meeting you and I remember your pride and joy in your daughter, then 5 years old and attending UCLA for classes. R. I. P. and thank you for the musical joy you brought to so many.

Words can not express the laughter Mr. Holmes brought to the Payne Ave family. He was a true blessing to be around. I never seen a down time for him. He was filled with joy and laughter at all times. I am praying for the family.

Born and raised in New York City, I got my first radio promotion job with now defunct Scepter Records. A key component of my responsibilities was to familiarize myself with DJs and others who determined airplay around the country. The name Rick Holmes was a stand-out. When I moved to LA for Motown, I soon discovered why he had become a veritable icon in broadcasting. I listened to him intently on both KBCA and KJLH ... his magnetism was inescapable while his knowledge of the music and its makers were seemingly endless. We met but a few times, but each was memorable and unique unto themselves. No doubt, Rick Holmes made you feel "at home in your own home". My he rest peacefully in his new one.

Rick was a member of the greatest team of jazz dj's in history, nation wide. Rich, Jai, Les and the other were instrumental in bringing jazz into the homes of thousands of listeners. I still have the album he did with Cannonball on ASTROLOGY. Rick will always be remembered in Los Angeles. Peace and blessings to his family.

Rick was a beacon to me and many many lovers of great music, especially jazz.
His knowledge was encyclopedic and his musical taste impeccable.
His DJ delivery style was so so cool, incomparable really.
And his spirit was joyful and positive and contagious.
It's why I brought him back to L A at KJLH in 1981. At night he was a king of the airwaves. 'Holmes In Your Homes.'
JAZZmeister par excellence.
The RH Factor was truly a beautiful cat!
RIP,kind sir.

I worked with Rick at both KBCA and KJLH as a sales/GM manager. Rick was a one of a kind on air talent. He was instrumental in bringing Jazz radio as a format to new heights. Ricks shifts were entertaining and with his knowledge of music and a steady bevy of guests the same main stream advertisers who had labeled the format geared to BBQ pits and and shoeshine parlors took notice. The RH factor reigned and along with Chuck Niles, Jim Gosa,Tollie Strode Jai Rich and Rod Mc Grew ratings sizzled. He was a giant in his craft and we have lost an important figure in our culture.

You will always be remembered by us.

September 4, 2015

Rick was a part of my daily life throughout my years as a resident of Los Angeles. His voice and musings kept our spirits up and our noses to the grindstone. He and the other Black Jazz DJ's made FM radio hip and viable.
He will be sorely missed.
May he rest in peace with the sound of jazz, forever.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my mentor, friend, colleague and C0-MC. I will never foregt the host of "The Debonair Rick's Affair" as my broadcast career is in large part successful because of what I learned from him.

Mr. Holmes... I stand in the shadow of your legacy at KJLH Radio... I am honored to honor your memory. I share bits and pieces of your legendary radio style with the younger radio folks here at KJLH.. do they listen? I'm not sure, but unmistakenly your voice adn style is at teh nucleus of what the station is to the communities of Los Angeles... God bless you and yes, enjoy your heavenly reward..... Thank you for you...

We serve an awesome God!

I'm very sadden by this bad news. Rick was one of the hippest DJs in LA starting in early 60s at KBCA FM 105.1. I listened intently to him, Les Carter & Jai Rich.growing up in LA, his name was "Bible" regarding jazz. Who can forget his association with Cannonball Adderley recordings with spoken word and jazz, a catalyst in the community, approachable brother wherever you'd run into him , at Z&Z clothiers, magnificent bros hair stylists or at Sopps carwash. Love you Rick, RIP good brother.

Mr.Holmes you were one of the reasons why I enjoyed jazz and our music as an art form so much. You "Ric A Tic'd and Factored that" into my transistor radio at night and I fell asleep awakened to Jim Gosa. Man, I loved me some KBCA and you and Jai Rich were the reasons why. Rest Well sir. Thank you

We emphasize and we specialize, in the sweet sounds of jazz.

Thank you for all of the joy you brought into my young life, Rick. I can still hear you - "This is Ricks Affair, with the melodic, lyrical, powerful, sounds of jazz." I'm sure you, Jai Rich, Horace Silver, and Gerald Wilson are gonna have Heaven smokin.
