Alan Armer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 9 to Dec. 10, 2010.
ARMER, Alan A. Alan A. Armer passed away December 5, 2010 at his home in Los Angeles. How do you celebrate 88 years of Emmy Award winner Alan Armer's life, commemorating his professional achievements, and importantly, his essence in just a few paragraphs? To put it in a TV writer, producer and director's words, our dad's life was a rich montage of background music by Frank Sinatra and The Kingston Trio, capturing a man teaching passionately to his students, listening patiently to his son trying to get out of his curfew, oozing pride watching his grandson score a basket during a game, savoring each bite of apple pie a la mode, starting a conversation with any beautiful woman in the room, and kissing the hand of his daughter while he lay dying in bed. In between these important moments, Alan's career spanned more than 350 television episodes and many notable achievements including: - Pioneering work on some of TV's first shows such as "My Friend Flicka" and "Broken Arrow" - Producer for "The Untouchables," the seminal 1960s gangster series starring Robert Stack - Won an Emmy as Producer of "The Fugitive," the popular David Janssen series that set audience records in the late 1960s - Two-time President of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - Distinguished college professor for 20 years at Cal State Northridge whose campus today features the Alan & Elaine Armer Theatre His adoring wife of 53 years, Elaine, preceded him in death in 2002. He is survived by their children Ellen (Jeff), Michael (Joey), David and Aimee (Dave); grandchildren Rachel (Martin), Taylor (Mark), Spencer, Leah, Hanna and Ethan; great-grandsons Ford and Cole; and his loving friend Lenore Ross. Dad, it's a wrap. We will miss your sweet smile, your corny jokes and how you talked lovingly about your beautiful family. Final Long Shot: Alan riding off into the sunset... Fade Out A celebratory memorial will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, Dec. 12 at the home of Alan's daughter Ellen. I had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful Mr. Alan Armer in Los Angeles in late 2003. He was not only a very talented filmmaker but he was also a very nice and generous person. Mr. Armer produced one of my most favourite television shows, THE INVADERS, which I've adored since I was a kid.

I sent a private message of condolence to his family via his e-mail address and I hope they received it.

I remember Alan from L.A. High School, and going to Sunday school (assuming this is the same Alan Armer). Great guy! Rest in peace.

Alan was a terrific professor. Many of the skills and insights I learned in his classes I have taken to my many jobs in the industry. I was so impressed by his teaching presence as a student that I nominated him for the distinguished teaching award in 1990 in which he was the first for our department to win. He was a very generous person and will be solely missed.
