December 3, 1928 - January 4, 2016 David DuBois Horner, a retired army officer, father, and friend, died Monday due to complications from pneumonia at Providence Tarzana Medical Center. He was 87. Dave Horner was my first crush as a 14 year old whose grandparents were friends of David's parents. He was 20 and attending West Point, and I was fortunate to spend some time with him while he was on summer vacation in Clarksburg in the early 1950's. Dave was a wonderful person, and became the standard for me in the future when I evaluated other young men I met as I grew older. We were able to reconnect via e-mail when he was married to Mimi, whom he loved dearly. The world has lost a real gentleman, scholar, and lovely human being.

Always Near

Don't cry that I am lost.
Be not sad to feel not my touch.
If you listen you will
hear my voice in the wind.
Feel my hand on your shoulder with the morning sun.
Feel the cleansing rain as I quench the flowers thirst so they may bloom.
See me as you glance behind you and hear my foot falls on the gravel path.
I am always near as your heart beat
and your smile.
