Angela Barton Obituary

October 30, 1932 - November 26, 2016 Angela Barton, of Los Angeles, California, died on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the age of 84 in the Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena, after a long illness following a stroke. Angela was known throughout her life for her kindness, warmth, impeccable style, natural elegance and striking beauty. She was born on October 30, 1932 in Villars-Sur-Ollon, Switzerland to an English father and Dutch mother. Angela lived in Cannes, France before moving to Great Britain for the duration of World War II. After the war, she lived in the Netherlands and in the late 1950s she moved to the USA. Angela was based in New York City and then San Francisco while she worked as a stewardess for Pan American Airlines, traversing the globe in DC-7s. In 1960, she married and relocated to Texas and then to Phoenix, Arizona. Angela became a top fashion model locally for over 20 years in print and runway and was a favorite model of Hollywood designers Edith Head and Helen Rose. She was on a first name basis with many fashion designers. Her last fashion show before retirement was in 1983 for "Dynasty" clothing designer Nolan Miller. Angela was active in charity work and a co-chairman for the Phoenix Heart Ball. She was instrumental in creating a campaign to incorporate residential parts of Phoenix with the town of Paradise Valley in Arizona. In the mid 1980s, she spent time in Paris and Gstaad, Switzerland before settling in Los Angeles, California. Angela and journalist Richard Gully were dear friends and companions for several years until his death in 2000, and she was frequently mentioned in his "Beverly Hills [213]" magazine column. Angela was an avid snow skier and ice skater and skied all over the world. She was a polyglot and fluent in 5 languages, which made her a terrific conversationalist. She was witty and had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed socializing, attending galas, openings, and parties. Angela had a great passion for life and loved fashion, design, music, reading, traveling, and animals. She is survived by her sons Douglas Bruce Barton, Beau Barton, and sister Tallulah Zonneveld. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Humane Society of the United States and ASPCA.

It was 1977, I was 18 yrs. old, and I was the Maitre D’ at Trader Vic’s Restaurant in Scottsdale. It was so great when Angela and Bunky would come for dinner. Bunky would say things to me like “I don’t know whether to buy Angela a Rolls Royce or a Bentley.” He was funny and elegant, also a very philanthropic guy. Angela was stunningly beautiful, and very sweet. She was truly lovely, and would let him be the center of attention. Fantastic couple.

As a hair color apprentice at the Doyle Wilson Salon in Los Angeles I got to know Angela who's hair I would shampoo and blow dry on a monthly basis. After finishing my program and earning a chair at the BOBS Salon in Beverly Hills Angela sought me out because she had become allergic to the color being used on her hair. After some research I found a product she could tolerate and Angela became a client for many years after that. I was so flattered and honored that she came to me . Angela had a kind and generous spirit and treated me, when I was assisting, just as she treated me as a full fledged colorist. With kindness and respect. I always made sure that I planned her appointments so that I could color and blow dry her hair. Though it has been many years since I have seen her and even into my retirement I will always remain fond of Angela and hold a special place in my heart. She was a great and elegant lady and I'm sure will be missed by all whose lives she has touched.

My fondest memories of Angela are the times we went for high tea at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, times where she had my own handicap mother over for lunch and tea and my favorite time spent with Angela was a screening at the DGA for Black Swan. She always was so elegant, stylish and engaging. She no doubt influenced my life with fashion and love. My heart goes out to Douglas and Beau for their loss. Love and peace to all. Xo
