Gary Harris Obituary

GARY WILLIAM HARRIS
November 19, 1935 to February 26, 2014
Gary Harris, best Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great -Grand- father…has left us to be with his Lord in Heaven and will be missed by those that loved him so much.
Gary was born in Springfield, Illinois to Charles Ashby Harris and Dorothy Aida Luttrell and was the 6th of nine children. The family moved from Illinois to Culver City in 1945 when Gary was 10 years old, then to Monterey Park for the duration of his school years. Gary raised his family in Valinda and La Puente, and then enjoyed life in Claremont for his remaining 33 years.
In High School Gary was a standout athlete in Track and was awarded the Post-Advocate Ironman Award for scoring the most points for the track team at Mark Keppell High School in Alhambra. This was one of the proudest moments of Gary's young life.
In more recent years, Gary was proudest of the 'Hole in One' he scored at the Santa Anita Golf Course on the 15th hole!
Gary received a Bachelor of Science degree from Cal State Los Angeles in 1959 and at various companies as a Controller and Cost Accountant. In addition, he worked for various local Race Tracks, where he made many lifelong friends.
He was a lover of travel and will be remembered sitting on his deck in Del Mar, California, sipping his coffee or his wine and staring at the ocean. Many happy memories and cherished years were enjoyed there with his family.
In 1955 Gary married Yvonne Bernice Flanery. High School sweethearts, they met on the beach in Balboa and remained the loves of each other's lives for 59 years. Gary is survived by his wife Yvonne, son Jeff (Judy) of Las Vegas, NV, daughter Lori Prescott (Greg) of Orange County, CA; Sisters Margie Marchetti (Jack) and Linda Grossner (Bob), Grandsons Matt (Olga), Steve, and Evan Harris of Las Vegas and Reno, NV, Granddaughter Lauren Denault of Los Angeles, CA, Great-Granddaughter Mila Harris of Las Vegas, NV and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his twin daughters at their birth, brother Thomas Harris that died as a child, and sisters Dottie Cyr, Mary Jane Hostick, Joanne Cellini, Barbara Hemple and Judy Jehl.
Memorial services will be Saturday, March 8th at 2 PM, Todd Memorial Chapel, 570 North Garey Avenue, Pomona, California, 91767. The family requests donations be made in Gary's honor to Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation, www.mds-foundation.org. Arrangements handled by Todd Mortuary, Pomona, California.
