Charles Pirtle Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Newman Pirtle, 74, longtime resident of Las Cruces passed away at his home in Tijeras on Monday, August 4, 2008. Charlie was born March 17, 1934 in San Benito, Texas; first son of Carl Filmore and Mary Alice Pirtle. He spent his youth in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, graduating from McAllen High School. Soon thereafter he joined the US Army, and the government, in its infinite wisdom, shipped a boy from south Texas to join the infantry in Alaska. Charlie took to the wilderness, and his strong love for the outdoors was kindled into a passion and way of life that would never die. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, Charlie attended college at Texas A & I University, where he rodeoed, hunted, ran track, and sometimes attended classes! Next, in 1961, Charlie joined the US Border Patrol and was stationed in Las Cruces-spending his entire career in New Mexico. To say that Charlie enjoyed a successful career with the Border Patrol would be an understatement. His reputation grew throughout the Southwest - even extending deep into Mexico, where those he was charged with apprehending, knew of his name and legend. That reputation was one of dedication, skill, integrity, honesty, and a fair hand. No farmer or illegal alien wanted Charlie to be on the job - not because they did not like him, but only because the probability of escaping his tracking skills was so unlikely. Beyond his larger-than-life reputation as a law enforcement officer, hunter, tracker, and National Champion pistol marksman, Charlie possessed a warmth of character rarely seen today. He often said he had been born a hundred years too late, and friends and family can attest to his disdain for "new-fangled gadgets" such as microwave ovens and personal computers. In addition, his penchant for keeping everything he ever owned was renown; but no more than his ability to keep it all tidy and neatly composed. He was a pack-rat of immense organizational skills. Yet beyond all of these things, more than anything, Charlie was a gentleman, a patriot, a cowboy at heart, and a warm and caring human being. His hospitable nature can be supported by any of the multitude of friends that have enjoyed his cat-head biscuits with gravy, sourdough bread, or campfire cooking - all the while being entertained by one of his many stories. This honest and straight-forward nature, this code of conduct, and this rare gift for warm friendship; this is what will be missed the most by the many lucky persons that called him - Friend. Charles Newman Pirtle was preceded in death by a sister, Carla Mae, and both of his parents. He is survived by his wife Sara, brother Paul, sons, Robert, Scott, and Carl; and an extended family of loving daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We invite all family and friends to share a time to remember Charlie and honor his life. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 9th, 2:00 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver Ave. SE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests honorariums in his name be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, 5705 Grant Creek Rd., Missoula, MT 59808, Attn: Michelle Tucker, National Border Patrol Museum, 4315 Transmountain Dr., El Paso, TX 79924, or the NRA, 11250 Waples Mills Rd., Fairfax, VA 22030.

Charlie would bake his Mom's potato chip cookies recipe and bring them to work at Foxworth Galbraith, share with his co-workers. They were delicious! Charlie was an amazing human being and a true friend.

I had heard of Charlie while I was in the Border Patrol but never got the opportunity to meet him until working with the Rural Border Patrol Operations course out in Socorro, NM. I knew Charlie to be one of the friendliest men that I have ever met. I enjoyed his company and learned much from him. His biscuits were great and he was a gentleman at all times. If you are a Christian you will see Charlie because he certainly was.

I met Mr. Charlie several years ago through Police Pistol Competition. He is one of the most interesting people that I have ever met and is without a doubt, one of the nicest people I have ever met. I have been fortunate to visit him at his home the last two years. The stories that he shared with myself and my colleagues will be memories that will last a lifetime. Mr. Charlie, you will definately be missed by your friends in Mississippi!

Charlie was such a special person. I've known him since I was a little girl and I always thought of him as one of the few "real" cowboys left! He will be missed. I am truly sorry for your loss. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Sara, Carl, and Jody,
We were both very lucky to have met Charlie. He was such a positive bright joy to be around. I know how important he was to Jody and what a wonderful father-in-law, actually father he was to her. Our prayers go out to all of you, especially Sara. Take care of yourself and allow people to take care of you.
Love Always,

Sara and Family:

Billy and I loved Charlie. We loved how you and he teased each other. We were honored to know Charlie and call him friend. I remember when I was a little girl at the pistol matches that he talked to me as if I were a "big person." My grandmother loved him, too, as he spoke Spanish to her and was probably at least as charming when he spoke Spanish as he was when he spoke English. When we met up with Charlie later in Raton, we always looked forward to our time together with you and Charlie. We loved Charlie's stories and how he loved you and your little dogs. We will cherish those memories forever. We love you and think of you often.

I am a little late in making this entry since I only today received the online information, but have had a chance to read all the other responses and it has all been said much better than I could have. I will just say he will always be remembered by me and then by my kids who met Charlie when they were little but still know who I am talking about when ever I mention the name "Charlie " today some thirty years later. I have told stories of our hunts and times together to them for so many years they will never forget him either. Yes, he was one of my friends and heroes. I will miss him but will always know and recall him in my heart and cherished memories.

Mr. Charlie was my idea of what a lawman ought to be. Besides that, he was a good friend. Last October, Charlie joined Bart Skelton & I at Deming, NM, to film segments for the Guns&Ammo TV show. What a wonderful time we had! Charlie Pirtle was all man and a yard wide. I am proud that he was my friend.

August 13, 2008

Sara, I have always admired the love you and Charles held for each other. A love such as the one you shared is truly a rare thing. You know how I felt about Charlie and you also know that I could never find the words to express this. I think Caleb put it best. Charles is the best elk hunter in New Mexico and no one could ever make beans as good as his. Why is this true? That is simply answered. Charles had a passion for all he did. His passion for hunting taught me more than I could have ever hoped for. The Bryan family will miss him sorely and will always be here for you as you both have been for us!

On, Sat. 9th August, 2008Valor Jack, and I traveled to the highest peak of the snowbird Mountains, N.C., elevation 5,260 feet, since I was unable to travel to the ceremony in N.M. for the passing of our great friend ,Charlie Pirtle. We spent the day up in the high country, hiking 15+ miles, nice and cool, even in the month of August. There was no doubt that my spirit was there with Ms.Sara, and Charlie's family/friends during the N.M. ceremony, but I couldn't help but feel a bit of Charlie there with us on that mountain top. Charlie will be always in each of our memories, as a fine gentleman, and great example as to how one should live his life, priorities, and attitude. Let those of us who were blessed to have met him, share in the fact that God blessed us with that opportunity. As we update our web-site, we will modify the Cadre section with tribute to Charlie Pirtle. To each of you, stay strong, and may God continue to bless you.Dan'o

Sara, I am so sorry to hear about Charlie. I was born when Scott was a senior in high school and Charlie was already a best friend. I've known him all my remembering life. Charlie and his mom seemed to be at everything that involved Scott. Then there was JoAnn, and Scott seemed to travel to see Charlie first - and if there was time left, JoAnn. To see Scott and Charlie seated side by side, you would think - normal. When they both stood up, it was laughable. I am not sure why they were so close and remained so.Charlie was decent in every way (that I knew of). Scott like to smoke and drink and have a good ole time. I think Charlie was Scott's guardian angel. He was closer to heaven in height and heart!I am sorry for you, Sara. I hope your life was good, and that will go on with memory and good because of the person I instantly loved. You made Charlie happy and complete. Thank you.

HI: Sara, I just heard of your loss and I am so sorry, he was a great and wonderful man and I know that you will miss him terribly, as I am still mourning the passing of Dwayne. They both were cut from a different material than most men and both were a gentleman at all times. Again I am so sorry to hear about the death of Charlie.
Was it a heart attack? Please keep in touch and you know that I am hurting just like you and will be praying for you, because the future without your loved one is so hard to take, but we have to go on and live like they would want us to.
So Sorry, Love Eagle

So sorry to hear about your Dad. From the stories we have heard, we know he holds such a special place in all your hearts. May the abundance of memories you all have with him get you through this incredibly heartbreaking time. Know that we love you and our thoughts are with you. When you are ready we would love to share a cold one in his honor.

I, as others always thought that Charlie was one of the finest to ride the river or mountain with. He was someone that always brought a smile to everyone's face. I only knew him as a fellow officer that was a pleasure to work with.

I have just returned from the memorial for Charlie in Albuquerque. I am so grateful Sara that you, Robert, Scott and Carl allowed us the time to be with you for this moment to cry and to laugh with you upon this ocassion. I say laugh, as sometimes the joy that was in Charlie's heart was brought alive to me from the words so many had spoken. I am grateful for the words from his brother, the boys, and Charlie's Angels. Ron Busch reminded me of Charlie and his fixation with a good pocket knife. My father had always said, "a man can't get through life without a good pocket knife". I told Charlie that, once after a match in Raton. He remarked to me that once while he was a Marshall at the Federal Court House in Cruces he was on duty checking the contents of pockets of people coming in and scanning their briefcases, etc. He remarked that a three brested suit lawyer came up to his station and emptied his pockets and placed the contents in a small bowl Charlie had provided. He noticed his change and keys but also the absence of any pocket knife. He courteously stated, "Where is your pocket knife?" To which the lawyer replied he did not carry one. Charlie responded in his peaceful manner, "How can you live without one in these parts? A man can't live without one!" Behind the lawyer was a young female lawyer. Rather than placing her purse and briefcase on the table to go through the x-ray scanner, she opened her purse and emptied its contents into a bowl as well. Charlie inspected it and there amongst the lipstick, keys and coins were two pocket knives. Charlie just touched the first laweyer on the shoulder and pointed to the bowl. He then put his arm around the woman in a Christian manner and said, "Ma'am you are quite a man!" She just beamed and felt so proud. Charlie did not say it, but I reckon' she must have known Charlie for some time. Anyone who did always knew where his heart was. He seemed to always make a person feel better leaving than he or she did before they left him. The world is less for his having left, but he left a legacy. May we all strive to be more like Charlie. His boys seem to have learned that from Charlie.

I knew Charlie Pirtle only in the context of gun stores. If the measure of a man is the size of the hole his passing leaves in the lives of those who knew him, then his measure was truly large in mine. I will miss our talks, especially the ones we will not have in the future.

Please accept my condolences.

August 9, 2008

Anyone who came into Charlie’s life soon knew the stories that stitched together his life. If you were lucky, after he met you, he would tell others a story about you.
You may know us as “the little girls” or Charlie’s Angels. We met Charlie and Sara on a hot day in August, when they knocked on our door. We had just moved to Las Cruces the day before. Who would have thought, when we looked through the peephole and saw Sara straightening Charlie’s tie (they were on their way to the Elk Banquet), a plate of Mam Maw’s potato chip cookies in his beautiful hands that the friendship of a lifetime would be formed in 11 short months. We even had the worn path between our houses to prove it.
They fed us, nurtured us, laughed with us, laughed AT us (only a Yankee girl would comment that a fur was lined with leather), and taught us to love the West. They took us camping (of course, we had to barricade ourselves with pieces of cardboard that we found to keep the snakes away- and put anything shiny away from those pack rats Charlie told us about), we shot GUNS! Which we loved learning about and a trip through Charlie’s gun safe was a journey we marveled at. Each gun with a story and a history that only Charlie could recall perfectly each time he told it.
Charlie always had a way of making you feel like you were the most special person on earth. He made stringy meat and biscuits every time we were around. He dressed up as Santa Clause on our first Christmas together. He flew East for each of our weddings – how special did that make us feel? Sometimes all it was was a wink and a nod, that twinkle in his eyes, approving of whatever you had just done. Something as simple as refilling his coffee just made you feel happy.
It was fate that brought three Yankee girls to live in a house next door to the most amazing people we have ever had the honor of knowing. Charlie and Sara became our family, our best friends, our confidents, our protectors. We will carry Charlie with us forever. The way he made us feel, the strength in his hugs, the pats on the back that would send Aaron to the ground, and the warmth and compassion that only a true gentleman can show.
-Charlie's Angels

Charlie Pertle was a giant among men. His presence was always felt in any geathering he attended. He was what every father wished his son to grow up to be.He influenced many many young men including me by his honest straight forward approach to life. He and my father R. H. "Coke" Hedgecoke of Ruidoso competed against one another in many pistol matches and were the best of friends. The Lord insurded Heaven a winning Pistol Team when he recruited those two. We will miss you Charlie Pertle. God bless you and your family.

Charlie Pirtle, you were a legend in your own time among shooters, hunters, law enforcement people and anyone who enjoyed knowing a GentleMan, a man's man.

I believe those who went before you were lonely and called you home - to keep them company.

I met you only once, saw you at several 'shoots' and heard about your adventures via friends. I knew you were one of the rare breed of men. Thanks for entering in my life, even if only a briefest of times.
You were very special.

Introduced to Charlie by my friend, Dwayne, I enjoyed discussing some of the Border Patrol Greats with you, like Bill Jordan and Bill Tony. Most people never heard of Tony, but Charlie and I knew he was the best shot. And, I enjoyed shooting against him at a Deming competition several years ago (in the 1990's). Thanks for the memories, Charlie, we will miss you.

Dear Sara, Carl, Jody and Paul,
It is with great sadness that we are thinking of you and your families. It was such a treat, honor and a pleasure that we were able to hunt lions with Charlie and Carl on one action packed morning this past winter! Charlie had a wonderful time as we all did and what a great man we were able to meet and get to know if even for those few short hours...
None of us know what life and God has in store for us and so we need to be like Charlie and make the best out of everyday.
Gather comfort from knowing that Charlie had a great life full of adventures...I am sure he had no regrets.
Love, Kelly Glenn-Kimbro and Warner Glenn

To Sara and all of the family,
My wife and I are truly saddened by your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Charlie was indeed a hero to many, many people, including my Dad, and me. I remember shooting one of his single action Colts at a Turkey Shoot in TorC. It came down to Charlie and me. After several shots, he eventually "missed" and I wound up winning the turkey. At the time, I was on the top of the world to "beat" a shooter of Charlie's caliber. Now, that I'm older, I'm sure he was just being gracious, as he was always in everything he did. He taught me what it was to be a good man. I just hope I learned the lesson well. God bless you Charlie, we'll see ya down the trail!!

Sara, you are in my thoughts and prayers, as you go through this time of hurt and sorrow, but you are strong and you will survive.
Dwayne and I thought a lot of Charlie, they both had a lot of interests and both were gentlemen at all times. I will all ways remember the times that he would stop at our house in Cuchillo, maybe just for a chat or to go hunting Javalina.
When the hurt subsides, you will still have your memories of your life together and your love for each other will keep you strong. I know because I have gone through this also.
I know that you will have a lot of support from his many friends and family.
Take of your self.

Dear Sara, I am so sorry to hear the news about Charlie. He was a truly “Great Man” who was sincere in his words and always a gentleman. I will always have fond memories of our dove hunts in Las Cruces. I’ll never forget those days (when I was a teenager) he would give me a hard time when I didn’t have a pocket knife on me. It seems like he was always asking me if I had one and I seldom tried to disappoint him. He will forever be missed. Sincerely,

All i was told was "is your head cold". I was wearing my baseball cap in the hose. Anyone who knows Charlie knows thats wearing a cap inside is just plain bad manners. I liked going to Charlies house exspecialy when he had his friends over talking old stories i loved hearing them. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Pirtle during the time he worked for the Border Patrol when they were located behind the Shell on Hwy 70; I worked there, sometimes during the evening shift - his presence always made me feel safe. He was very much a gentleman and true cowboy. I would see him in passing from time to time around town, this would bring a smile to my face. Wish I had the opportunity to know him better. He reminded me gently of my own grandfather...

My sincere condolences for your loss.

I met you Charlie only once during our stay in Red River and to this day I have never forgot you. I was totally in awe over this man I was speaking with. Charlie, your stories will remain in my heart and will be shared until my last breath. It was an honor to have known you, and to remember you is blessing. I got a feeling that Jesus will love to hear your stories. I can not wait for the day when our paths cross again. I never got to know my grandpa's, but meeting you made it all ok. God bless you Charlie. My prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Charlie.

It was an honor and privilege to have shared this earth with likes of Charlie Pirtle. I had the pleasure of shooting with Charlie on several occasions; sometimes it was metallic silhouettes or bowling pins, but as often as not, all we shot was the bull!
Some thirty years ago, at a bowling pin shoot, I was being needled by another shooter. He was explaining the futility of entering the competition with a revolver rather than a semi-automatic. Charlie was helping register contestants, and overheard the gist of the conversation. With a smile and a wink, he whipped a $100 bill out of his shirt pocket and wagered that I would place in the top three spots!
In 1978, a $100 bill was slightly larger than they are now. It fact, it looked like a saddle blanket. I was a very relieved young man when the other shooter mumbled a bit and declined the offer. After he walked off, I asked Charlie what he would have done if the guy had called his bluff. Charlie said "who's bluffing? I would have won a hundred bucks."
As luck would have it, Charlie was right. I did place in the top three shooters; I shot third. But there was one pistolero that led the pack by a healthy margin, a guy by the name of.... Charlie Pirtle.
With Charlie's passing we have lost one of the last truly honorable men, Men that conducted business with their word and a handshake.
My sincere condolences to Charlie's family. May the Lord bless you as you celebrate his life and mourn his passing.
