Frank Clark Obituary

Frank E. Clark, Jr. was born on December 21, 1922 in Crawforsville, Arkansas to Eugenia Wiggs and Frank E. Clark. Frank graduated from high school in 1940 and worked several odd jobs in and around the Memphis, Tennessee area before joining the United States Marine Corps on December 8, 1942. He shipped out the next day to Parris Island, South Carolina. Frank attended clerical school at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and Quantico, Virginia for additional training. He was stationed at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California as part of the Navy V-12 training program, training young Marine Corps officers-to-be. Frank's next posting was to the Hawaiian Islands with the 23rd Regiment, 4th Marine Division. At the end of World War II, Frank served in a military police Battalion before posting to Okinawa, Japan with US occupation forces and then returning home. He was discharged April 1946 in the rank of Sergeant E-5 and immediately headed to Arkansas A & M at Monticello. He graduated from Arkansas A & M in 1949, after marrying Helen Watts on October 10, 1947 in Monticello. Frank re-enlisted into the Marine Corps reserves in November 1947 and was called into active duty at Camp Pendleton, California after his graduation from college. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1951. Frank and Helen moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1951 after his discharge from the Marine Corps. He began working at the White Sands Proving Grounds with the U.S. Nike program, within the civilian personnel office. He retired from White Sands Missile Range in 1970 and then embarked on a 20 year employment in Washington, D.C. He worked for the Department of Education, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Department of State for the remainder of his working life. Frank was a well known trivia hound and a top-notch personal tour guide of all locales traveled or visited and traveling with family and friends was one of Frank's greatest pastimes. In 1995, Frank's wife Helen suffered the first of several debilitating strokes at which time Frank retired and devoted his time exclusively to caring for her until her death in 2005. He was very involved in the local community and was one of the oldest active members of Diablos Perros the local chapter of the Marine Corps League. In 2007, he was one of the inaugural veterans to attend the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. at the invitation of Honor Flight of Southern New Mexico. Frank is survived by his daughter, Gena Clark and granddaughter, Caree Contreras. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen, brother William Clark and sister Mary Tucker. Frank E. Clarks' memorial service will be held Monday, August 8, 2011 at 1:30 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Boutz, Las Cruces. Honor Guard will be provided by Diablos Perros. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Honor Flight of Southern New Mexico, Community Foundation of New Mexico, 301 S. Church Street, Suite H, Las Cruces, NM 88001 or First Presbyterian Church. Gena, I am so sorry for your loss, I'm sorry we haven't been in touch in many a year, maybe we can correct that the next time I come to see my Dad. I ran into your Dad in the strangest places too. Once on the Metro from Alexandria VA to the Pentagon, I was quite surprised to see him on the same train I rode on everyday. Then another time at my grocery store in Alexandria, VA, he was just sitting on a bench in front of the Safeway. It was fun to talk to someone from Las Cruces, whom I had known most of my life. I know you are going to miss him and your Mom greatly. God Bless. Karen McMillan Williams

Hi Gena & Carie, It is with great sorrow I write this little note remembering my long time friend. The first time Frank and I met was at A & M College in 1946. That memory is so fresh in my mind it seems like it happened only yesterday. Many good times are in my memory bank, hunting, fishing, in Arkansas and in New Mexico. I also have fond memories of working with him at WSPG and our joint family activities . He was a dear and trusted friend. I always looked forward to seeing him while he was working in Washington. I especially enjoyed the time Carie visited there and we had BBQ at the little place in Rock-ville, Md. I know Frank Rests In Peace. I wish you and Carie the very best in the years to come. Hi Gena, So sorry to hear about your dad. He was there when my dad was interred with his Marine Corp uniform. I remember going down to your house around the corner to your house and your dad showing the NASA films on the 16MM projectors. IT was great stuff. By the way I am living 5 miles from the back gate of Camp Pendleton right now.

Gena,

It is with great sadness that I read of your loss. There will be many who talk of what a pleasure and honor it was to have known your Dad and Mom. I remember running into your dad in the strangest places, or so it seemed to me at the time, at a Boy Scout Camporee at Ft. Seldon, at the CPO office at WSMR (he retired the same day I finished my first work phase), of course the swim meets our kids had, but it really shocked me on one of trips to Washington DC to run into your Dad and Mom at a special BBQ joint we'd always go to. He was gracious, kind and interested in what I was up to. Our prayers are with you.

Gena,

Bess and I will be out of town Monday. We are taking our granddaughter back to Palms Springs to begin school.

Mr. Clark is and will always remaing a wonderful memory for me as part of neighborhood of mothers and fathers who watched over each other and each others' families.

I often joked that I would have to go all the way past Jerry Farris' house on Bellamah Drive to get into trouble because if I didn't one of the mothers or fathers would catch me.
It was a neighborhood where people took care of each other.

Frank always called be 'Pedro' and I always called him "Hard Rock". I don't know how that got started but it was comfortable.

I remember the times where all of the neighborhood would gather in your backyard and we kids would take turns cranking the ice cream maker and would switch off when it got too difficult to turn........I also fondly remember the summer Thursday night thespian gatherings in the Merritt's yard directly across the street from your house. They just don't make neighborhoods like that anymore.....as kids we were very lucky.

Frank (Hard Rock) always treated me like an equal never as a kid and we had a great friendship. I am proud to have known Hard Rock and will remember him fondly as an inspiring example of a true, old fashioned gentleman and a good friend.
