David Prior Obituary

PRIOR, DAVID

David Prior, 46, surrounded by family and loved ones died Saturday. Dave is survived by the love of his life, Christine Festin, of Coxsackie, NY, his fiance, and his sons Noah and Luke and Ms. Festin's daughter Grace Festin Caldara. He is survived by his parents, Myles and Mary Ann of New City, NY, his brother, Myles Prior and wife Karen of New City, NY, his brother Tom and his wife Peggy of West Nyack, NY, his brother Chris and wife Suzanne of Castle Rock, Colorado and his sister Marianne Boyer and her husband Jay of Yorktown Heights, NY as well as 12 nieces and nephews: Patrick, Michael and Caroline Prior, Kaila, Jose and Keith Boyer, Casey, Brianna, and Emma Prior, and Reagan, Erin and Maeve Prior. Dave was a member of the St. Thomas Parish in Delmar, NY. He was a communicant at St. Francis Chapel in Albany, NY. He wishes to thank St. Ambrose (Latham) Life Teen community and the St. Augustine's (New City, NY) parish community and friends and family for their prayers and support over the years. Dave was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and Pace University School of Law in White Plains, NY. Dave was a career public servant and he worked as an attorney at NYSERDA since 2001. He would like to thank his friends and colleagues, particularly those at NYSERDA, for their overwhelming support, patience, generosity, and caring. Dave reflected that if he had died suddenly, he would never have learned the capacity and generosity of how blessed he was by the network of support around him. Dave wishes to thank Dr. Ira Zachon and the staff from New York Oncology and Hematology and Dr. Nancy Kemeny and the staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer in New York City for their professionalism, spirit, hope and support. Dave wishes friends, family and loved ones to celebrate their lives and if they choose to attend the memorial services, to celebrate memories and a life and move on, not mournfully, but joyfully recognizing that every person is truly a blessing and every day is a wonderful gift. The memorial service will be held on Friday, February 18th from 2-4 & 7-9 at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, NY 10956 (845) 634-6110. The memorial mass will be held on Saturday, February 19th at St. Augustine's Church at 10am, 114 South Main Street, New City, NY 10956 (845) 634-3641. In lieu of flower, Dave has requested that donations be made to St. Francis Chapel, 145 Wolf Road, Albany, NY (518) 459-2854.

I still can’t believe you are gone. You were such a light to all of us of courage, hard work, and love. I miss all the good times and laughs. I know you’ll be there waiting at the heavenly gates when it’s my turn to receive the crown of glory. Yenta and Ricky Bobby still miss you Dave!

I just learned today of Dave's passing when I received the Alumni Magazine from Pace Law School. I knew Dave while we were both students in law school. He was a genuinely nice guy who could always make people laugh. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dave,
Are you swimming with the dolphins? Are you playing lacrosse morning til night? Are you having a brew with all your favorite saints? Is there food in Heaven? Please send me a sign if there's chocolate where you are!

I saw you in a dream, slow dancing with the Blessed Mother. Is she as pretty as we always imagined? I miss you more as time goes on but I am happy for you that you are enjoying your celestial mansion. In a little while we will be all together. Save a place for me and give Jesus a big hug! Oh.... And if you see Miss Ilene, tell her how much I still miss her and kiss her on her big black nose for me! Ricky Bobby really misses our kayak trips. Maybe we can do that with you and Miss Festin again. Heaven will be a place where we can all go white water kayaking in super warm water and no fear of drowning. How cool will that be??

David and I went to St. Augustine's School together when we were kids. He was a great guy. Smart, funny, kind, sincere, competitive, and humble. A few years later I would see David and his brother Myles working hard in their landscaping business. Always eager to say hello and catch up with an old friend. As time went on we saw each other less and I would wonder how David was doing. By reading the thoughts in this guest book I can see that my friend has done very well. He touched many lives. I consider myself fortunate to have known him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to David's family and friends.

To all Dave’s family and loved ones, I send my deepest sympathies. Compared to the other writer's on this memorial, I hardly knew Dave. But when I saw his obituary, I felt compelled to honor him as best I could and to learn more about him at the memorial service in Delmar. He was someone special. We were counterparts in some ordinary legal matters at the AG's Office and for NYSERDA, but engagement with him was never ordinary. The extraordinary quality of his character and his being came through, in doing the ordinary. I guess, knew this even after our first matter, and asked him to speak with my son, who was contemplating a career in public sector law; and Dave, with full grace and skill met the request. It was a privilege to know him. I hope I can in some small measure be a better person for having had that honor.

David and I grew up together, played ball and went to grammar school together. I will always remember Dave for his warm smile, his intelligence and his kind ways. He was one of the kindest and warmest people I have ever had the pleasure to know and he always went out of his way to make everyone around him feel special. He will be missed by all.

May God bless David's family and friends in this time of sorrow.

February 17, 2011

To the entire Prior family, Noah, Luke and Christine, my deepest sympathies and condolences on Dave’s passing. I knew Dave for almost 25 years. I first met him in law school where we shared an apartment for a couple of years. Since then we’ve kept in touch on a regular basis and remained close. I feel truly blessed to have known Dave and to have spent time with him. He was a remarkable person.

I will always have fond memories of Dave. He had an infectious laugh, a great sense of humor and a keen wit. I was always overwhelmed with his never ending generosity, compassion and selfless nature. Dave was the kind of person who would do anything for you. I will never forget that summer day when I told him on the phone how I was struggling by myself to plant 10 large cherry trees at my house. The next morning Dave appeared at my door with a shovel in his hand and determination in his eyes. He had driven almost an hour from Albany to help me. He worked with me all day in the summer heat until the last tree was planted just as the sun was setting. Even though it was hard work he never complained once or spoke an ill word. In fact, he made it fun. That was his nature. That was his way. That was the way he lived life. He always had a way of lifting your spirits. He helped me in so many ways.

There is no question that Dave touched and inspired so many people by the way he lived his life. He will always be an inspiration to me. His courage, strengthen and fortitude during his illness were truly remarkable.

Dave will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in our hearts. Our loss is God’s gain. Rest in peace my friend.

To the entire Prior family, Christine , Noah and Luke,
Although I will be at the services on Friday and Saturday, I am sorry that I was unable to make it to Albany on Tuesday. It is so heart warming to hear the stories of the many people whose lives Dave so dramatically impacted. I first met Dave in law school where we became very good friends but I'd venture to guess that he was the same "Dave" to us that he was to his high school friends and his college friends. Dave was dedicated, caring, loyal, compassionate, honest, intelligent, hard working and always alot of fun! I look back on those 3 years as some of the best in my life and Dave was certainly a big part of that .

Although we did not see each other as much after law school as we had before we still stayed close and spoke regularly. I was so happy to have lunch with Dave last summer and was surprised by how strong he looked for someone who had endured so much . Dave's courage and strength has been and will remain an insiration to us all. We could all benefit by being a little more like Dave Prior--I know I could.

Dave, you will be missed! Your friends, Joe & Pat Martin (Valhalla, NY)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of his family.

Marianne,
I am so sorry to hear of your family's loss. (Brian Tovin sent a mass email out to the Rockland County Swimming group.) Having lost my own brother, I know you are feeling it is way too early to have lost yours. Be thankful you had as many years as you did with him. How much my household is mourning the loss of Dave, is a great testimony to who he was. The actual hours we got to spend with him were too few. Yet from early in the time my sister Christine and he had together, Dave offered sincere caring and interest in my children. He prayed for them, I prayed for the boys he so loved. We also prayed for the military men in our lives: his brother in the Air Force, and my son now a Marine.
He was a valued addition to the Festin clan, bringing us concern, support, food, and completely joining us in the things we find humorous (go figure!).
I am grateful for his faith and that he is near God now. I am still sorry we did not have him longer.

My friend Dave will be a part of me for as long as I draw breath. He is an inspiration and was the man that I hope I can one day become. He had the physical constitution of an anvil, the heart of a quiet warrior, and a beautiful soul. I will forever miss and remember, "my favorite juggheaded Irishman" Our friendship will forever be my rock. The twinkle from those baby blue eyes as we laughed away our individual problems are now part of the heavens, and I will look skyward and know you are watching over us all.
Peace be with you ...

I wish Dave's family peace in their minds and hearts. I remember Dave from our Holy Cross years. He was an open, friendly, and kind man--one of those people who always made me smile when I saw him coming my way. May the light he brought to your lives continue to shine.

February 15, 2011

In my mind, Dave is an Olympian gold medalist, a purple heart warrior, who may have lost the battle with cancer but won the respect and love of everyone who knew him. During his “walk in the park” with cancer, as he referred to it, he came to work at NYSERDA when anyone else would have stayed in bed, and then incredibly, when you tried to reach out to offer him support, he would end up lifting your spirits instead. He was an unforgettable role model for how to keep loving life and everyone in it, while sparring with the worst kind of punches life can deliver. I already miss seeing his face in the halls of NYSERDA.

As evidenced by the wonderful stories told at Dave's memorial service and the abundance of friends and family in the church, Dave touched so many lives. He always had a kind word and cared more about how you were feeling than describing what he was going through. The only time you could get him to talk about himself, it seemed, was when you asked him about Luke and Noah. His love for them was so apparent, down to the license plate on his car. I will miss having him stop by my desk and talking with him at work. He was always a bright spot in my day. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

The news of Dave's death surprises and saddens me deeply -- I have vivid memories of his ebullient personality, deep musings about the meaning of life, and rough-edged sweetness. He was a key figure in my college experience. I wish I had stayed in touch. To Noah & Luke: your father was a wonderful man -- even as a college student, it was clear he had a special combination of strength and goodness. I will likely not be able to attend the services, but my thoughts will be with all of you.

To Christine, Noah, Luke, and Dave's family -- I had the privilege of coaching boys' lacrosse with Dave -- although his significant knowledge/experience with the game helped every player and coach involved in the Bethlehem program, it was his patience and humble/unassuming approach that made all of the boys feel so welcome on our team. I valued his leadership and quiet example he set for the team. Noah and Luke, you should be so proud of your father -- it was evident how proud he was of you and how much he loved you. I was fortunate to get to know him and am better as person because of it -- everyone else who knew him can say the same. God Bless.

I remember meeting Dave the first day of our freshman year at Holy Cross. He was so friendly, and so smiley, and just so very welcoming. He and I both lived in Carlin dorm, and he and a few of the freshman guys from his floor were going up to Hogan Ballroom for an event. He invited me along with them. It was so nice to be made to feel so welcome, during a time that we all were in a new environment. He always was so friendly during our four years at Holy Cross. God bless Dave and his family.

I just read Dave's obituary and was both saddended and uplifted. I worked with Dave on some NYSERDA matters over the years and wondered why he wasn't on the panel of a NYSERDA CLE held last week. I always enjoyed talking with Dave and we always worked out any issues we had. I am uplifted by how Dave spent his final days... in the selfless, loving acts of preparing so he could lighten the load of his fiance, boys, family and loved ones. May Dave Rest in Peace and may God Bless and Keep his loved ones.

February 14, 2011

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of my good friend Dave’s passing and want to express my sincere condolences to Christine, Noah, Luke, and the entire Prior family.

Dave and I were classmates, teammates, and friends since our days as teenagers at Clarkstown High School North in Rockland County.

Despite the fact that he no longer lived in our area, I was very fortunate enough to have kept in pretty good contact with Dave since high school and spoke with him frequently over the past few years throughout his battle with this dreaded disease.

True to his humility, Dave rarely spoke of the difficulty of his fight, choosing to focus more on the positive aspects of his life, specifically the loves of his life, his fiancée, Christine, his two beautiful kids, and the rest of his incredible family, all of whom were a tremendous source of strength and inspiration for him.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of them today during this incredibly painful time. But I know they take a great measure of pride in knowing that Dave dealt with his illness the same way he dealt with most things in his life … with great heart and determination, an unbelievably positive attitude, and not an ounce of self-pity.

Over the past few days, I’ve thought a lot about my friend Dave and the memories he’s now left me with. The high school parties, the Jersey shore trips, the Springsteen concerts ... the Friday nights at Maximus and Peasant’s Pot … the lacrosse practices and games … just so many good times.

But when I think of Dave, above all, I’ll think of his favorite phrase, “It’s been real”, three words he would always say to his friends before he parted for the day or night. Those are, in fact, the last three words he wrote in my high school yearbook after our graduation.

But it would take much more than three words for me to describe my friend Dave Prior … intelligent, hard working, thoughtful, generous, funny, compassionate, strong, respectful, inspirational, reliable, and loyal are just a few. He was the type of person any father would want their son to be like, something very rare these days, a true gentleman and I know he lived his final days the same way he lived his life, with great dignity and grace ... a leader to the very end.

Like anyone who knew Dave Prior, I’m incredibly saddened today.

But I also consider myself extremely lucky to have known him, and even more fortunate to have been able to call him a “good friend”, and I will never forget him.

Rest in peace, and God bless you, my friend.

You’ve certainly earned it.

“It’s been real”.

Love,

Jim Trainor

I was deeply saddened to learn of Dave's passing. Dave and I worked together at NYSERDA for several years. Dave was both a respected colleague and friend. The strength and courage exhibited by Dave during his illness was an inspiration to all. Dave's greatest passion in life was "family" -- his two sons, Luke and Noah, Christine and his entire family. May your loving memories of Dave comfort each of you at this very difficult time and in the days to come.

Dave was our assigned counselor at NYSERDA and I had the pleasure of working with him and appreciated his insight during contract reviews. More importantly, we shared plenty of personal experiences regarding life's challenges and parenting stories that made us laugh... and sometimes not. Throughout it all, Dave had one of the biggest hearts of anyone I've ever known. He was authentic, kind, a man of integrity and had a true father's heart. He will be dearly missed and I take comfort knowing he is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord. Que Dios te bendiga, David!

Dave was as genuine a man as you will ever meet in life. He led his life without artifice or pretense, and his self-authored obituary stands as a testament to his selfless love and concern for others, as well as his deep and abiding Faith. By the way that he lived, and the way that he met death, Dave has given his sons the ultimate example of uncomplaining courage. My thoughts and prayers are with Dave and his family and loved ones. It was an honor to have known him.

I had the honor of having David work with me at the Attorney General's Office. David was kind, generous, and a giving soul. I told this story once at my retirement party, that on a return trip from NYC I expected to find my car buried in snow at the train station and I was ill equipped to deal with it. To my suprise when I got back to Albany someone had cleared my car. That someone turned out to be David.
I know if there is a heaven he is there. May he rest in peace.

Our entire family is praying for Dave, who we are confident is currently basking in his heavenly reward. We are praying too for Christine, Noah and Luke, as well as Dave's parents and siblings. May God grace you with strength in the days ahead and may you be consoled by the loving memories of your fiance, father, son and brother. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.

Dave-
You have been my adopted brother for 10 years! You are engaged to my dear sister-in-Christ, Christine. Having you in Heaven as a great prayer warrior for your boys, Noah and Luke, for Chris and Grace, for your Mom and Dad, your brothers and your sister, and the oodles of family and friends, means so much to us. I believe you are a saint. Ask Jesus to send us His comfort and peace. We all miss you soooooooo much. Happy Valentines Day, Dave. No small coincidence that your article ran today, a day when we celebrate LOVE. You had such a big heart and we all felt your love. I would say "rest in peace" but I know you... you are not resting at all. You are watching over your boys and Christine. You are playing LaCross. You are hosting parties for those that went before you... in your Energy Star mansion (with PV, geothermal, and solar hot water) - LOL. Sending you hugs and kisses on this Valentines Day. Thanks for all you have done for me. I will always love you, brother!!
