Roy McMahan Obituary

McMAHAN, ROY FRANKLIN JR., affectionately known by many as Skip McMahan, passed to a better place on Monday, November 13, 2006. Skip was an entrepreneur, industrialist, real estate developer, and thoroughbred racing enthusiast his entire life. Skip and his late wife, Angie, were two of the most loyal Churchill Downs fans and supporters for more than fifty years. Up until the day of Skip's death, he was claiming thoroughbred horses. Skip was a kind and generous man who provided support to the needy and helped so many people anonymously. Skip was the founder of Middletown Manufacturing Company, a specialty metal products company that served the furniture and automobile industries, later merging with a public company to become Lear Siegler, Inc. He retired to begin seriously developing commercial real estate. Skip, along with his father, R.F. "Mac" McMahan Sr., developed one of the first shopping centers in Louisville in the early 1950's known as McMahan Center in the Hikes Point area, a property still owned and operated by the McMahan family along with other shopping centers in Louisville, including McMahan Plaza, Westport Plaza, and most recently, Old Brownsboro Crossing. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Angie Fentress McMahan; and his parents, Mary Alice McMahan and R.F. McMahan Sr. He is survived by his two daughters, Colleen Liebert and DiAnne Hutcherson; and his son, R.F. "Rory" McMahan III and his wife, Laura; seven grandchildren, Dawn Poston (Jason), Tracy Cutting (Malcolm), Rob Hutcherson (Fleurette), Sarah Liebert (Chris Garner, fiancé), Madeline McMahan, Delilah McMahan, and R.F. "Mack" McMahan IV; four great- grandchildren, Jacob Greenlee, Jonathan Lenox, Evelyn Grace Cutting and Gus Cutting; stepmother, Marjorie McMahan; his brother, William Louis McMahan; aunts, Juanita Baker, Mildred Hulsewede and Ida Yaggi; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank his loving caregivers, Theresa Armstrong, Michelle Crepps, Misty Scott and Doug Van Meter. His Funeral Mass will be at noon on Friday, at St. Martin of Tours, 639 S. Shelby St., with private burial later in Shady Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be noon-8 p.m. on Thursday at Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations in Skip's memory, may be made to the Wayside Christian Mission for the Skip McMahan Dining Center.

I was saddened to learn of the loss of "Skippy". He was a very nice and generous man and I am glad I had the oportunity to work with him. Upon talking to CalRay (and noticing in Skip's obituary that Dennis wasn't mentioned), he informed me that Dennis had also passed away last year. Another nice man that I'm glad to have had the oportunity to have worked with. I'm so sorry I didn't know. My heart goes out to all of you at such sad times. May your memories of these great men help comfort each of you. You have been in my thoughts and prayers and are thought of often. I wish all of you and your families a blessed life together.
With Sympathy

I am very upset at Skip's passing. I only found out today 12/3/06 that he passed. During Oct/Nov 2005 I was having a delima about selling my home on Rosemont Ave. I knew he was all knowing in the Real Estate area, and he was more than willing to let me call him and discuss it with him. He always called me back when he said he would, and always answered my calls. When i got the "last" offer on my property from the buyer ( a prominent school accross from me) he told me to "take the offer before the sun goes down". I had to laugh. He said that Meredith Dunn School was "very near to his heart" but did not say why, and I didn't ask. So i sold them my home and property, when i told him he was very happy, that the school got the property. On a sourer note, he said, during one of our conversations, that "i'm not feeling too good these day, I don't think I have much longer". I joked around with him, saying "common Skip you'll outlive all of us"! We had a laugh, and said goodbye, he said, if you need any more help feel free to call me. I didn't, I wish I had.
My heart goes out to each and every one whoose life he touched, and that was many. The story from Wayside made me cry and prompted me to share my experience with this great man. May God Bless. I type this through tears, I hope i spelled everything right.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the McMahan family. Herbie and I shared a lot of good times with Skip and Angie over the years. Know
they are having a lot of good laughs now that they are together
with a lot of their good friends
from Hikes Point.

I have moved to Texas but several friends sent me copies of the newspaper articles.

To the McMahan family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I have fond memories of stories often told about Skip & Angie by my Mom & stepfather (Lou and Carl "Herbie" Hacker). I saw Skip on a number of occasions and remember him as a very sweet and generous man. He will be sadly missed by everyone that had the chance to meet him. I grew up in Hikes Point and always admired him.
I'm sure that Herbie and all their rowdy friends from the old days welcomed him in Heaven with open arms. He will be loved forever.

Although I never got to meet Skip in person, I spoke to him many times on the phone. He and my husband, Sonny had a wonderful time with the horses. Sonny trained for him for many years. They also spent many fun hours at Churchill. I will miss hearing his voice on the phone and Sonny has lost a dear friend. Our thoughts are with you for the loss of your father and grandfather as well as a gentle giving man.

The Louisville community has lost a Prince....an extremely kind and generous man who cared for all.

For decades, Skip has been a man who would call up the Mission several times a year just to find out what the needs were. He especially was concerned with the need for food for homeless men, women, and children. Many times without warning, he would call up wholesalers and have food sent down to the Mission. He always was on the lookout for opportunities for other needs as well, for example, buying all the seconds at a Kentucky underwear manufacturer and distributing them to the homeless. He did the same with a diaper manufacturer.

In 1994, Wayside Christian Mission had a 38-year old homeless gentleman who passed away without a family to claim him. Not having the money to provide him with a proper burial, we called many local companies to get all the components of a decent burial donated. As our friend was about Skip's size, and owned nothing but denim overalls, I called Skip up and, after explaining the situation, asked whether he might have an old suit he no longer wore that we could use for the burial. Without hesitation, Skip said he would send us one. He not only sent a beautiful gray, pin striped suit, but a white dress shirt and a beautiful tie. Our friend looked wonderful. As I was straightening his tie in the coffin, I noticed something in the pocket of the suit....Churchill Downs race tickets! We smiled and left them there.

Skip was such a loving man. Our community will miss him, and we will miss him sorely as a personal, dear friend. If we all continue Skip's legacy of generosity and compassion, what a wonderful community it will be.

With all our love and admiration, always,
