Robert Landick Obituary

Robert E. Landick, M.D. Robert (Bob) Ernest Landick, Jr., age 90, was born Nov. 30, 1922 in Lynn MA, the son of Robert and Betsy Landick. He died peacefully on August 27, 2013 in Petoskey MI of natural causes. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis in 2011 and is survived by his five children, Robert Landick of Madison WI, Steven Landick (Toni) of Marquette MI, Gregg Landick (Tiller) of Perry MI, Vicki Janzen (Rick) of Phoenix AZ, and Bruce Landick of San Francisco CA, and his five loving grandchildren, Kimberly, Nathan, Connor, Katie, and Sara. Bob grew up and attended high school in Lynn, then attended Bates College of Lewiston ME, graduating with a degree in Biology in 1944. With the outbreak of WWII, Bob enrolled in officer training at Bates and, immediately after graduating, joined the Navy as a Lt. JG serving aboard the combat support ship Achenar in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. On leave, Bob married Phyllis Chase of Saylesville RI, a fellow Bates alumnus, on June 17, 1945 in RI. After completing naval service, Bob attended Medical School at Tufts. He began private practice in Beverly and Marblehead MA before moving with their first two sons to Charlotte MI in 1954. Bob completed training as an anesthesiologist at UM-Ann Arbor in 1965. He and Phyl then moved to Lansing, where Bob practiced anesthesiology until returning to family practice in 1970, first helping to establish a residency program at Sparrow Hospital and then as a faculty member at MSU. Bob and Phyl became active members of Edgewood United Church upon their move to Lansing in 1965. They moved to Okemos in 1987 and enjoyed volunteer work at Edgewood and with Habitat for Humanity after retiring. In 2009, they moved to Independence Village in East Lansing, where they were rewarded with many new friends. Bob had a life-long love of sailing, camping, hiking, outdoor sports, and adventure that he imparted to his children through many carefully planned trips and outings. Bob remained remarkably active to the end of his life, sailing in the Apostle Islands and hiking in Michigan's national forests in his last weeks. Through his medical practice, volunteer activities, and friendships, Bob touched many lives with compassion, generosity, and integrity that were his enduring values. He will be remembered fondly by those who knew him, particularly friends with whom he grew close in his later years, and most of all his children and grandchildren who will miss him greatly. A Memorial Service celebrating Bob's life will be held on August 30, 2013 at 1 p.m., Edgewood United Church, 469 N. Hagadorn Road, East Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial gifts in Bob's name to Habitat for Humanity Michigan.
