He was born in North Jay on April 20, 1935, the son of Herschel Greenleaf Sr. and Mazie (Ober) Greenleaf.
Herschel lived in Dryden and was educated in Wilton schools. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and earned his high school diploma while serving in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Herschel enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years until his honorable discharge on Oct. 25, 1960.
Herschel worked at Tex Tech in North Monmouth for 27 years until his retirement at age 64. After taking the summer off, he and his wife opened their cleaning business, "J&H Cleaning Service." He enjoyed his two dogs and a special cat and took them for many walks and rides. Also after retirement, he enjoyed his morning coffee and doughnut at Cumberland Farms and sharing every moment with his wife, Jean.
Herschel was predeceased by his grandparents; parents; and his younger brother.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Allen) Greenleaf; his two grown twin sons, Kirt and Kirk "Nip and Tuck"; four grandchildren Nathaniel, Christopher, Trey and Taeilor Greenleaf; and two special grandchildren, Jason and Felicia Ridley; a brother, Kermet and his wife, Trudy; a sister-in-law, Christine Greenleaf; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece and her family, Joe and Sue Christianson; and one great-great niece, Karaley.
Herschel's life will be celebrated graveside at a committal service with full military honors at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, at the New Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Herschel's memory may be made to the Harold Alfond Center For Cancer Care, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903-0828.
Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
