The daughter of N. Oscar and Florence (Sullivan) Anderson, she was born on Sept. 13, 1916, in Charlton, Mass. She attended elementary schools in Charlton and Auburn, Mass., and graduated from the High School of Commerce in Worcester, Mass., in 1934. She was a graduate of the Osteopathic Hospital of Philadelphia School of Nursing.
She was employed as a registered nurse in Winthrop, Maine, and Portland, Maine, prior to her marriage to Delbert Dostie of Winthrop in 1941. Mr. Dostie died in 1959.
After retiring from the Veteran's Administration Center at Togus, Maine with 25 years of service, she moved to Florida. There she earned a diploma from Jones College in Jacksonville in 1985. She was a member of the San Jose Catholic Church.
During her retirement of more than 30 years, she enjoyed oil painting, reading, needlework, word puzzles, playing the organ, attending musical theater productions and traveling. She drove her motor home between Maine and Florida several times and thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Alaska, Lourdes and Fatima.
She was disappointed that she was never able to visit the Holy Land. She had a lifelong love of the ocean and had many fond memories of time spent with her family and friends at her camp in South Harpswell, Maine.
She was predeceased by her son, David F. Dostie, brother Bernard Anderson, and sister Marjorie Wood.
She is survived by her daughters, Judith Stanley and husband Paul of Jacksonville, and Barbara Rose and husband Frederick of Atkinson, N.H.; grandchildren Craig Stanley of Jacksonville, Sara Tomaino and husband Ross of Southborough, Mass., Jonathan Dostie of Marlborough, Mass., and Jeffrey Rose of Atkinson, N.H.; great-grandchildren Adeline and Nathaniel Tomaino of Southborough, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A third great-grandchild is due this week.
The family would like to thank the staff at Taylor Manor of Jacksonville for the many years of wonderful and loving care that they provided.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27th at the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winthop. Burial will follow at the Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop.

Our mother was an extraordinary woman. She grew up on a farm in Massachusetts during World War I and learned the value of hard work and determination very early in life. She put herself through nursing school in Philadelphia. She then moved to a small town in Maine where she met and married our father. They had three children. She was a working Mom when most other mothers were at home full time. She was a young widow in her early 40's who was left with two teenagers and a preschooler to raise. Her retirement, when she turned 60, was one of the highlights of her life. She spent time at her camp on the coast of Maine and drove her beloved motor home from Maine to Florida by herself for many years. She loved to paint and play the organ--two hobbies she took up after she turned 70. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy, and she never lost her abiding interest in what was going on in their lives. She overcame many obstacles in her life and showed us her remarkable resilience right up to the very end.

I met Thelma at Taylor Manor about six years ago when my mother lived there. I enjoyed talking with Thelma often. She was a bright, lovely lady. My mother died two months ago at the Taylor Care Center with advanced Alzheimer's Disease. I am also very grateful for the Taylor staffs' ten years of excellent care. Dianne Teagle
