Mary Corbin Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Corbin
WESTBROOK -- Mary Elizabeth (Jones) Corbin passed away on May 15, 2011, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with her family by her side. Mary is at peace now having spent the past three years battling cancer.
She was born on July 27, 1955, in Portland, to the late Thomas and Charlotte (McGuire) Jones.
Education was incredibly important to Mary. She always told her son, Joshua, that a good education will give you what you want in life. Mary's dedication to learning led her to volunteer with an adult literacy program. She went to college in her 40s so that she could give back to her community and to improve herself as well.
She enrolled at Andover College and received her associates degree in accounting, while still working full time. Knowing she could do more, Mary pursued her B.A. in accounting at Husson College, and then enrolled at the University of Southern Maine for a master's degree in adult education. Mary maintained a 4.0 GPA at school throughout her entire college education while also raising her son and working a full-time job.
In her primary career, she spent many years working in the health insurance field with such companies as Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna and ASG. She played a pivotal role in the development of the Dirigo health plan. Mary also had a second career teaching first-year students at USM.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Charlotte Jones; and is survived by her husband John and son Joshua, who love her dearly. Mary is also missed by her brother, Thomas Jones, and sisters along with their husbands, Eleanor and Howard Spear, Peggy and Rocco Leo, Theresa and James Brown, and Ashley DiMarco; as well as many other friends and family members.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, May 19, 2011, from 4-8 p.m., at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Prayers will be recited on Friday, May 20, 2011, at 9 a.m., at the funeral home, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Please visit www.jonesrichandhutchins.com for additional information and to sign Mary's guest book.

Well Mary, it has taken me practically a week to get myself together enough to be able to write in your book, even though I've talked to you each day privately since you started your new journey. Gosh, it has been a long long road for you over the past 3+ years and I will remember it all with the heaviest of hearts. With that said, I also want to remember all the good times and very happy moments we spent/shared together. Never mind the day-to-day fun of working together for almost 7 years but the walks we would take at lunch, a few shopping sprees and of course, out trips to Springer's Jewerlers, just because we felt entitled!! We always had a story for each other and how we would laugh if one of us would say "Well, let me tell you..." and the other one would say "No, let me tell you!!". Let's not forget the the wonderful trip to the Grand Bahamas in 2007! That mid-night swim in the ocean, after a couple of cocktails, only to be told that sharks were spotted along the coast line at breakfast the next morning! YIKES! If we were together outside of the office you knew we were destine to get ourselves into some sort of "trouble" :). Let me close today by thanking you for being my good friend for what now seems like a very short time. You are a remarkable woman, a wonderful wife to John and an adoring mother to Joshua. Do me a favor and keep a seat warm for me. I love you Mary. Until we meet again...
Your eternal friend,
Denise Brennan

Mary, I have fond memories of our trips to Portland as a small child. I remember hurting myself on one of our trips and you being there to comfort and assure me that everything would be alright. Even at that young age you had such compassion. Thank You for being the bright light that you are and will forever be.

John and Josh,
I am very saddened with the loss of Mary. Mary was very special to me.
There are many happy memories that I will always have. I think alot about the fun times that we had together. One that sticks out to me is when we had gone to a conference together, and Mary, knowing that I am a vegetarian, had me hold a lobster up to my mouth, and pretend to take a bite while she snapped a picture! I will also remember her little dances that she did in the office, and her coming in excited to tell me about what she bought on sale at Kohls!
My thoughts and prayers are with you, and all of your family and friends.

Mary, you were more than a boss to me... You were my friend, the person I confided in and someone that changed me for the good. I will never forget our times together. Taking the kissing ball class this past Christmas, and the writing class. Our Saturday shopping trip when I bought the electric pencil sharpener. I was so happy and you thought I was crazy... And then you brought me your yakee swap gift from your family christmas party because it was a box of penciles. I loved it. I will always think of you when I use a very sharp pencil. Although sharp penciles are my thing, it always made you laugh.

Josh and John- you are in my prayer. She was an amazing women and would want us all to remember her as such.

Your absence in the office is leaving such a hole in our hearts, my dear friend Mary. I am missing your little dances and shimmies when I look up and see you standing at the printer. I'm missing your infamous eye-rolling when I do something outlandish to make you laugh. God, your wonderful sense of humor and sharp wit made for a wonderful work environment. Miss hearing about your savvy shopping sense!! I love and miss you, Mary. Much love and many prayers to your family and friends. You have a heart of gold and touched so many lives in such a positive way. Lots of wonderful things to say...lots of great memories to reflect on. Rest peacefully, you wonderful, beautiful woman!! John and Josh:
The news of Mary's passing has saddened me indescribably. She was such a light in my life.....her smile, her laugh....warmed me from the inside out. The world has lost such an incredible woman, mother, wife and friend. She taught me so many things.....most important....the value of hard work...and furthermore....the importance of having joy and fun in life. Some of my fondest memories of "fun" are times with you both.

All my love and sympathy and best wishes to you both...

When the clouds part and we can see the sky....there will a new bright star shining down on us.
