H. Vance Smith, 80
PORTLAND -- H. Vance Smith, 80, of Freeport, died on Monday, May 23, 2011, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Jay on Aug. 23, 1930, the oldest son of three sons of Audrey (Calden) and Harold C. Smith. He was educated in Jay schools and graduated from Wilton Academy where he played football and was manager of the basketball team.
After high school, during the Korean Conflict, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in communications in Germany. While in Germany he met and married Edith Blumke. After his discharge he entered Tri-State College in Indiana and graduated with a major in accounting. The young family moved to Lynn, Mass., for a brief time before moving to Auburn to begin a remarkable career that ended with his retirement from Eastland Shoe in 2010 after over 40 years of dedicated service.
Vance enjoyed 'twigging' in the woods and making trails. He was also an avid reader, especially of history, and going on road trips to forts and battlefields. He was a football fan at all levels - from watching his grandson, Alex, play for Edward Little High School, following the Bears of UMO or the Patriots - all with a little tailgating. Vance will be remembered as a man of his generation where emotion was not visibly shown but his manner was very kind and cordial.
Vance is survived by his two sons, Roger Smith of Poland, Brent and his wife Debra of Auburn; his grandson Andy and his wife Lisa, his granddaughter Jessica, his grandson Alex; his great-grandchildren, Jade, Arien and Brody; his brother Randy Smith and his wife Judy of Hebron; and his friend Madeline Boulanger. Vance was predeceased by his wife Edith, who died in 1997; and his brother, Wayne Smith.
A time of gathering will be on Thursday, May 26, from 1 to 2 p.m., with a funeral service at 2 p.m., at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth. Please visit
