Joseph A. Garland, 82
OLD ORCHARD BEACH -- Joseph A. Garland, 82, of Old Orchard Beach, died on Monday morning, May 9, 2011, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough. He was born on Aug. 18, 1928, in Sanford, the son of Albert and Florine Garland and came to Old Orchard Beach as a young child. He was educated there and also attended Portland Junior College.
Mr. Garland served with the U.S. Navy during WWII.
On April 26, 1952, he married Lucille Demeule at St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford.
He owned and operated Garland's Oil Service for 43 years from 1954 to 1997 and Garland's Cottages in Old Orchard Beach from 1963 to 2002.
Mr. Garland was a member of St. Margaret's Church. He was a life member of the Biddeford & Saco Elks Lodge #1597, the American Legion and the V.F.W Post 7997 in Old Orchard Beach. He enjoyed boating in Saco Bay and vacationing in Florida.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Mr. Garland's devoted caregivers Betty, Heidi, Jamie and Lori.
Preceding him in death was his sister, Eyvonne Tarazewich in 2007. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Lucille Garland of Old Orchard Beach; one son, Steven Garland and his wife Evelyn of Cape Elizabeth, two daughters, Sharon Karalekas and her husband Charles of So. Elgin, Ill., Linda Bailer and her husband Paul of Scarborough; six grandchildren, Spencer and Thomas Garland, Peter and Michael Karalekas, Kelsey and Jillian Bailer; and two cousins, Ronald Labranche and Carole Bragdon.
Visiting hours will be from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. To share condolences online, please visit www.HopeMemorial.com.

I always saw Mr.Garland,growing up as a kid,working and dragging the hose from resident to resident,always taking the time to say hello,or giving a great smile.What a nice man.Im a sorry for your loss,Steve,Sharon,and family.Peace be with you.
