Susan Lippoth Obituary

Susan Van Aken
Lippoth, 74
SCARBOROUGH -- Susan Van Aken Lippoth, of York, died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a very brief illness with Leukemia.
She was born June 6, 1937 in Portland, the daughter of the late Walter and Alice (Willard) Trefethren. She attended Cape Elizabeth schools, Walnut Hill Prep School, Wellesley College and then graduated from Wheelock College with a degree in early childhood education.
She worked as an executive secretary for her husband's company C&L Sales of Danvers, Mass. and Sheldon's Gift Shop of York.
At four years old she donated her long, never been cut, blonde pigtails to the US Government. Her locks were used as the 'cross-hairs' in the Norton bomb sights of bombers to assist in World War II efforts. She was very proud of this. It would be the beginning of the many charitable gifts and multiple acts of kindness that defined Susan. She was the consummate volunteer. She could not say 'No' when it came to giving of herself, be it time or money. She would form many strong and lasting friendships because of her big heart.
Susan was a woman of very deep faith. As a member of the First Parish Church, she sang in their choir for 30 years. She also was a member of the Seacoast Community Chorus. Susan enjoyed music and playing her piano. Loving to learn, she continued to take piano lessons throughout her life.
Susan had a beautiful way of seeing each day as a gift and a new adventure. This would find her sailing the Maine coast or touring the US, Canada and the Alps via motorcycle with her beloved Don. It was their escapades together that made them known as an exemplary model of love for all that they met along the way. Her life's treasures were her husband, family, friends and her pets.
She leaves her husband Donald M. Lippoth; a son Donald M. Lippoth Jr. and his wife Cheryl of South Portland, three daughters, Kate Shevenell and her husband Joe of Cape Elizabeth, Barbara McWherter and her husband Scott of Morrisville, Vt. and Robyn Gaudiano of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister Eleanor Wolcott of Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lt. Dan Shevenell, USN, Kayla Becker, Kerry Sullivan and Fallon Lippoth; a great-grandson Landon Becker; and her extended family Gina Connolly and Dr. David Nelson. A son John P. Lippoth predeceased her.
Calling hours for Susan will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday June 1, 2011 in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 2 in the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York Street, York, Maine. Burial will follow in the First Parish Cemetery.

Dear, dear Don: The news came to me from one of our many mutual friends this morning . I am thousands of miles away on Orcas Island in WA.,but close in heart looking out on the water and thinking of that bright spirit that was Susie. The laughter and light she brought into my life came back vividly. With much love and deepest sympathy, Milly Vetterlein
