James Mills Obituary

James T. Mills

1923 - 2016 LANDGROVE Mr. James T. Mills, 92, of Montclair, NJ and Landgrove, VT died peacefully, July 17, 2016 after a brief illness. Known as Jim, he was born in Baltimore, MD on November 30, 1923. He graduated from Montclair High School and Princeton University (1947) from the School of Public and International Affairs. His col lege years were interrupted while he served in the United States Army's Tenth Mountain Division as a First Lieutenant on the Italian Front. After the war, he graduated from The Yale School of Law (1950) and practiced law in NYC concentrating on securities and mergers. In 1956, Mr. Mills joined the Sperry and Hutchinson Company as Assistant General Counsel holding many positions as the company grew and diversified. In 1980 he was elected Chairman and CEO of S&H. In 1981 Mr. Mills became President and CEO of The Conference Board, an international business organization, until his retirement. He believed in devoting time, talent, and support to non-profit organizations. As President of the Board of Trustees of The Kimberley School, he supported the merger to form Montclair Kimberley Academy in 1974. From 1990 to 1995 he served as President of the Montclair Art Museum. For 10 years he was President of his Princeton class 1945, culminating in its 50th Anniversary. From his vacation home in Vermont, he enjoyed skiing, golf, and fly-fishing. He was actively involved in the community including the worship services at the Landgrove Meeting House. His loving family, friends, and the natural beauty of Vermont were of prime importance throughout his long life. He is survived by his wife Frances (Keller) of 65 years and 4 daughters and their husbands: Elizabeth Durkee (Scott), Hilary Lambert (Brian), Frances Wonnell (Jonathon), and Margaret Kaplan (Andrew), and 10 grandchildren. Services will be held in Montclair, NJ and Landgrove, VT at a later date. Donations may be made to either the Londonderry Rescue Squad or the Landgrove Cemetery Fund c/o Brewster-Shea Funeral Services P.O. Box 885 Manchester Center, VT 05255.
