I played with Ev in the fall of 1975 when we both sat in with the Marin Jr. College jazz band. I knew he was the real deal of a trumpet player, but none of his background. He sold me one of his trumpets which I still have. We played the end of semester public performance, and he let me play lead. It was my greatest and last performance, my soon to be wife in the audience. I´ve long looked back with a warm grateful feeling for what he did for me. He saw a kid who loved playing trumpet and saw enough of a spark in me that he thought I could use a new horn and a better tone, and playing lead for my love. Rest in peace Ev, and my condolences to your family.

I've lots of special memories of Uncle Ev. One of my favorite was rising early in the dark on the 18th of April 1996 to drive into San Francisco where he played for those assembled to remember the 1906 earthquake. He started playing his trumpet right on 5:12 AM. It was a memorable and moving experience.

Trad Jazz was taken to even greater heights in the early 50s by Ev and THE BAY CITY JAZZ BAND that I was introduced to in 1955. I spent many satisfying hours listening to them both in performance and on record/cassette/CD. In fact, of all recordings in my collection, this ranks among the all-time most played. Ev brought together an incredible ensemble of musicians providing them with very tight arrangements still allowing ample room for improvisation. Their music was energetic, driving, uplifting, and in a word, inspired. Over the years, I've come to enjoy and appreciate the many facets of jazz, but TBCJB remains my roots.
Thanks Ev for your contribution to my musical education...Hal Plimpton
