To the guy who with Ivoreen Stella Chatfield visited Ely Cathedral March 2nd, 1945, and sent her a book Fenland Rivers on July 26th, 1946, just received that book from a store, Saucony Book Shop in Kutztown, PA. That's a tad over two months before VE day, surprised a family member wouldn't hold on to this!

I have only just seen this page, so I would like to add a few words, not just about my favourite Uncle but one of the greatest people I have ever met - a man with a great mind and a great sense of humour - a wonderful human being. My last memory of him was when he visited us in Germany, the only time I managed to beat him at chess over a glass or two of Jack Daniels, and a brief but enjoyable trip to Vienna. R.I.P. Liz-
Just learned of your father's death last month. I knew him mostly by reputation-my mother often talked of him and he was her favorite cousin. The times that we met, it was obvious he was a special, special person and cared deeply for his family-both immediate and extended. You and your family are in my thoughts.

From the moment I met "Grandpa," I was merely my future husband's girlfriend of a few months. Grandpa accepted me immediately into the family and made me feel as not just his grandson's girlfriend, but as his granddaughter. Through the years, my admiration and love for him continued to grow. He provided his family with so much love and kindness. His stories are legendary! It was an honor to know him and be part of his family. The memories of him will live in my heart forever. R.I.P. Grandpa - you are loved eternally!

Dear Liz,
Our sincerest condolences to you and your family. As your dad's colleagues, we always appreciated the light and joy he brought into a room. We call his distinctive laugh.
Be well and take comfort in memories of this special man.

Thank you all for your kind remembrances of my dear Father. He loved his wife, me and many family members and his friends and neighbors. He always enjoyed his students and the students loved him. Lots of people will miss him, me most of all!

Minotte was a wonderful colleague and friend who epitomized the fusion of scholarship and joie de vivre. Faculty parties with Minotte and Ivoreen are to be cherished!

My sympathies to you all. I have a fond memory of Dr. Chatfield when he visited my first grade classroom at the Swain School. Alexandra was a student in the class and was quite pleased that her great-grandfather was our "mystery reader" for that day.

He always amazed me, he never acted old, so full of life. We will all miss him and hope we will face old age with "Doc's" attitude. These are the quotes from my family and friends.

Raven Hanshaw So very sad to hear this sad news. Minotte was a testament to living each day as it is and being only as old as you feel. A wonderful man, who touched many lives. He will be very missed.

I remember Dr. Chats with much fondness. He was part of a terrific English department that really helped me when I was at 'Berg in the late-60s. Jack McCallum
