Charles Swider Obituary

Charles P. "Karl" Swider

AGE: 79 • Point Pleasant

Charles P. "Karl" Swider, 79, of Point Pleasant, passed away on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, surrounded by his devoted family. Born and raised in Newark, Charles faithfully served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict, returned in 1955 and soon after married his beloved Jean (nee Kluczek). Together, they moved to Irvington to start their own family. While in Irvington, Charles worked as a draftsman for Western Electric in Kearny, retiring from AT&T in 1990. In 1980 he and Jean moved with their family to Pt. Pleasant.

Rooted in faith, Charles served as a deacon at St. Leo's Church in Irvington, and was a faithful parishioner at St. Peter's Church in Pt. Pleasant. He had a love for country music, enjoyed playing the guitar, was an avid sports fan and was an outstanding athlete in his own right. However, nothing brought Charles more joy than watching his grandsons play ball. To remember Charles is to remember his devotion to family, and the credo to which he lived "Faith, Family and Friends." He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Charles was predeceased by his parents, Joseph & Nellie; sister, Jean; and brothers, Joseph, Stanley, and Bernie. He is survived by his adoring wife of 55 years, Jean; son, Steven & his wife Denise of Brick; daughter, Cindy & her husband Jim Grehl of Pt. Pleasant; daughter, Carolyn & her husband Mo Obaranac of Pt. Pleasant; and his beloved grandsons, Brian, Andrew, and Kevin. Charles also leaves behind his brother, John & his wife Helen of Florida; sister, Joyce & her husband Frank Toboadella of Florida. He also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Mary and Ann, many nieces and nephews especially Linda, Kathy and Jane with whom he spent all his favorite holidays. He also leaves behind many other relatives and countless friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-9pm at O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, and again on Thursday from 9am until the procession to the Mass of Christian Burial offered at 10am at St. Peter's Church, 406 Forman Ave., Pt. Pleasant. Burial will follow at St. Anne's Cemetery, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to St. Vincent DePaul Society (St. Martha Conference), 3800 Herbertsville Rd, Pt. Pleasant, NJ 08742. For more information, condolences, or directions, please visit www.obrienfuneralhome.com.

Jean,
I heard my Little League coaches name in church. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a great man. I followed in his footsteps and I been coaching baseball for over twenty years. I will always remember Coach Swider in my prayers. He was my first baseball coach who taught me more than just baseball. He was a great father and leader. I will always remember him rolling two pebbles in his hand on the sidelines. God Bless you Coach.
