Joseph Barris Obituary
AGE: 75 • Lakewood
Joseph A. Barris, 75, passed away peacefully at home on February 17, 2016. Joe or Joe Bear as he was known by family and friends, was born in Newark, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Barringer High School in Newark and attended Seton Hall University where he earned a BS Degree in Teaching. After starting his career in East Orange, he moved his family to Brick in 1972. He was a respected teacher in Wall Township for over 20 years and one of the first in Monmouth County to receive the Governor's Convocation on Excellence in Teaching. His students remember his warm nature and someone who was always concerned for their well-being and self-esteem. After retiring in 1991, Joe moved to Lakewood and began his own small business becoming a regular at the Jersey Shore arts and crafts show circuit. He spent many enjoyable days with friends in Leisure Village playing golf, mentoring new players in the art of bocce, and bowling for championships with his buddies. In the winter months he was an active snowbird and took pleasure in exploring both costs of Florida with his wife JoAnn. He was a proud and true family man being a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother-in-law.
Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoAnn and his sons Joseph M. Barris and partner Stephen J. Rubino of Howell, his son Jason of Point Pleasant Beach and his daughter-in-law Brenda Lowenstein and grandsons Alexander and Blake of Linwood. He will be loved and missed by his sister Dorothea Tillman nee' Barris and her husband Edward of Fogelsville, PA, his brother-in-law Joseph Guarino and his wife Mary Anne of Naples Florida, his brother-in-law Frank Guarino of Troy Michigan as well as many nieces and nephews, family and friends, both near and far.
Visiting will be Monday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, services will begin at 7:00pm. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101 would be appreciated. www.silvertonmemorial.com.
