Bett Houston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2018.
Bett Houston passed away in her sleep on December 16, 2017, after years of battling Parkinson's disease.

Bett was born March 8, 1932 in Lynn, MA, to George D. and Lillian K. Dunbar Grierson. She attended Fryeburg Academy in Maine and continued on to Bates College, where she met Harry Houston of Brewer, ME. After a brief courtship, they were married.

Bett was a pioneer in many respects as a woman of her day. She served in the US Navy for three years as an early Wave in the ROTC program, but shelved her career in order to raise her children as Harry attended Tufts Medical School and continued on as a doctor in the Navy. At the age of 44, Bett became a stock broker and had a long career as a Certified Financial Planner. In addition to their professional lives, Harry and Bett had a rich life of adventure as pilots, sailors, scuba divers, archaeology students and world travelers.

Surviving are Bett's three children-Susan E. Carlson, James D. Houston, and Barbara A. Houston-Shimizu-as well as four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 6 at 2 p.m. at Anchor of Hope Church in Silverdale. Bett will be interred with Harry at Tahoma National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Elizabeth Ellington Chapter, DAR at Linda Maynard, 9110 Phillips Rd SE, Port Orchard, WA 98367-8534.
