Alan Phillips Obituary

PHILLIPS, Alan Wayne "Pastor Alan" On Feb. 18, 2012, our Lord took His faithful servant Alan home to be with Him, his family, and many Christian friends. Alan was born on Nov. 1, 1931, in Franklin Park, IL. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Ethel & Frank; brother John, and sister Dorothy Ayres. He attended Leyden High School in Franklin Park, IL, where he played basketball and was Student Council President. After attending Union Theological School in Barbourville, KY, Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, IL, and the Chicago School of Broadcasting, he began his career as a newspaper reporter, radio newsman and television anchorman, having worked in Milwaukee, WI, Detroit, MI, Buffalo, NY, Washington, DC, Tampa, (WEDU) and Channel 22, Christian Television in Clearwater. While working at Channel 22, he felt led by the Lord to the ministry and was ordained as Senior Adult & Visitation Pastor at Harvest Temple in Largo, which he considered the fulfillment and purpose of his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Arlene; 3 children, a son Kevin (Jennifer); son Dr. Kelly (Dr. Laurie); daughter Kim (Scott) Shotwell, and 6 grandchildren, Kristin, Carter, Jenny, Mallory, Tyler and Koty. Although he spent many years in the secular world of news broadcasting, he will be best remembered as a pastor who cared for people and shared his love of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His family is grateful to his compassionate, Christian doctor, Randal Worth, who cared for him through his many years of challenging physical trials. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember him with a memorial gift may wish to consider the First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks in Largo, or the Suncoast Hospice at Woodside, 6770 102nd Ave., Pinellas Park, FL, 33782. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 3, at 2 pm at the First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks' Chapel. Many of you may remember being sung to on your birthday or being greeted by "Jesus loves you and I love you too," which he said often and truly meant.

Just learned of Alan's passing recently and wanted to offer my family's condolences. Alan and his family were neighbors of ours when they lived in Michigan. We all have fond memories of Alan, always smiling, watching him on Channel 7, and playing with his kids in his pool. I remember my parents, him and Arlene and the Corts, enjoying the Cort's pool as well. Phillips were one of the first in the neighborhood to have a ... are you ready for this... a colored TV with channels 56 (PBS), 20 and 50!! Loved going over there to watch Kimba the White Lion on PBS with Kim!!! I know it's been a very long time...a lot of reminiscing about the old neighborhood lately. You are in our prayers. So sorry for your loss...

I was so sad so learn of the passing of Pastor Alan. He offered so much compassion when he performed services for families for me, first at National Cremation Society, then at Rhodes Funeral Home, where I was funeral director. He was a kind soul and spiritual man who brought such comfort to grieving families at one of their lowest times. I hope such love and comfort fills his family, as he shared so much with others. He will be sadly missed.

to Alan's family: I am so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. He was a very caring and compasionate person. I knew him while I worked as a counselor at National Cremation Society. He did my mom's memorial service for me. He really believed in living God's word and will be missed by many. He is now with the Lord and looking down on us all.

I share in your grief and sorrow Arlene, and family. Alan was such a passionate man for Christ. Spreading joy and concern for all he met. No matter what walk of life you came from he was always there to offer love and support. There really aren't too many people like that in this world. Alan was world class act all the way. He had a true inspiration and passionate strategy to spread the word and love of Christ . His deep desire to help others and visitations to many a hospital nursing home and home visit made such an impact on those he sat with. His smile, hugs, laughter and words of comfort far exceeded any sermon most of us ever sat through. He was a true disciple of the lord.
