Anthony Waring Obituary

Anthony A. Waring, age 92, of Swansea, Mass., passed away on January 22, 2021 after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia (Blackmer) Waring. Born on March 17, 1928 to Ellis A. Waring and Ruth (Anthony) Waring in Cambridge, Mass., Tony resided there until his family moved to South Swansea in 1943. He first attended the Shady Hill School (43) in Cambridge, then graduated from Joseph Case High School in Swansea in 1946. Tony attended Williams College, before transferring to the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a B.S. Degree in Architecture in 1953. As a registered architect, Tony had his own firm for over 40 years. Upon retiring, he was elected to Emeritus status by the American Institute of Architects. Being involved in his community was a life-long passion for Tony. Over the years, he served as President of the Childrens Home of Fall River, the Stevens Childrens Home of Swansea, and of the Quequechan Club of Fall River. He also served as a Trustee of the Fall River Five Cents Savings Bank, an Honorary Trustee of the Home for Aged People, and as the Director of the USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee. He was a former Chairman of the Swansea Planning Board, the Park Commission, and the Soil Conservation Board. He also served as a Junior Warden of Christ Episcopal Church in Swansea Village. Active in wildlife conservation, Tony was an Honorary Trustee of the Bristol County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He was also an avid collector of decoys and fishing tackle. His keen interest in history and family genealogy led him to become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution as well as the Society of Mayflower Descendants. As a young man, he proudly served in the Massachusetts State Guard and the Massachusetts National Guard. Tony will be lovingly remembered by his wife of over 50 years, Virginia B. Waring, his two daughters, Jennifer Waring Capaldo of Swansea and Lynne G. Waring (Henning Thormaehlen) of Baldham, Germany, and his sister Susan Prideaux of Swansea. He will also be greatly missed by his three grandsons, Caden, Oliver, and Henry, and many nieces and nephews. Due to current public gathering restrictions, the funeral service will be private. Donations in Tony Warings memory may be made to the Stevens Treatment Programs, 24 Main Street, Swansea, MA 02777, or Christ Church, 57 Main Street, Swansea, MA 02777.
