Charline Scoggin Obituary

Charline Knudson Scoggin was born February 10, 1920 in Phillipsburg, Kansas. Initially raised by her grandparents, Tamar Lenore Kegel and Gustav Kegel, she later joined her parents Luise Knudson and Henry Knudson in Goodland, Kansas. After graduating from Goodland High School, she first attended the University of Wyoming where she became the first woman to lead a collegiate marching band as a Drum Major. She transferred to the University of Colorado Boulder where she obtained a Bachelors of Arts degree. It was on a University of Colorado archeological expedition to Colorado's Yampa Canyon she meet Charles R. Scoggin, a rising star in Southwestern and Plains archeology. On December 28, 1941, they were married. In WW II, her husband joined an elite group of United States and Canadian commandos, the First Special Service Force. Charline was pregnant with their son, when Lt. Scoggin was killed-in-combat on the Anzio beachhead. Never remarrying, she first taught high school English and journalism in Goodland before moving to Boulder, Colorado and Sunset Ranch at 28th and Baseline. She went on to become an Executive Secretary for Gordon Allott, Lt. Governor of Colorado, and then for Allott when he was elected United States Senator from Colorado. After Washington, D.C., she returned to Colorado as the secretary and administrative assistant for the Chief Federal Judge, Alfred Arraj. She then taught herself to use the stenograph machine, and became a certified court reporter in the Boulder District Court, In addition to her court duties, she reported medical conferences and national governmental meetings, some of them requiring Top Secret clearance. Following retirement, she served on the boards of various community organizations, including the Boulder Humane Society, the Boulder Spay and Neuter Clinic, Boulder Community Hospital, and the District Judicial Selection Committee. A longtime-resident of the University Heights community, she enjoyed friends and gardening. She was also an active alumnus of the University of Colorado. She is survived by her son Dr. Charles H. Scoggin (Karen), a grandson Dr. Charles F. Scoggin (Kirsten), a granddaughter Dr. Tamar V. McKee (Asa), and four great grandchildren, Eliza, Charles, Veda, and Byron. A private reception will be held at her home, Sunday, March 25, 2018 for her family, friends, and neighbors.

My condolences to your family. I am from Helena, MT and am associated with the First Special Service Force Association. I currently live in Westminster and wish I would have had a chance to meet Mrs. Scoggin. What an amazing woman!

This is about 60 years past when last saw Charline and her family. I believe Charles was going to medical school? I remember her as a live, laugh, love lady. She carried her cross well and helped others, I feel priveliged to have known the family. So Sorry.
