After high school he attended Bible school in California, followed by attendance at various universities from which he acquired multiple degrees in the areas of agriculture, forestry, entomology, research planning, and community development. During the summers he worked for US Forest Service in Montana, fondly sharing his memories of the Yaak and returning with family members several times. In the midst of his studies, he was drafted into the army and spent time in Vietnam. He also worked on agricultural mission projects in Tanzania in the mid 1970s.

In 1977, he married Miriam Dynneson.Together, they spent 24 years serving in Guyana, Nepal, and Tanzania. David used his skills to serve others as an agricultural advisor, program director, and teacher. His doctorate focused on education and program planning. In rural Nepal he directed an integrated development/hydro electric project. In Kathmandu he worked for Nepal’s Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training. In 1998, he helped develop and direct a program called Theology, Development and Evangelism at Wartburg Seminary in Iowa, where he taught for 10 years. During those years he served on the board of the World Mission prayer league, and traveled internationally with students. He later developed a master's level program in Community Development at Mt. Meru University in Tanzania. Since retirement in 2011, he was actively involved in church and community near Mankato, MN. He loved gardening and enjoyed spending time with family and his extended network of friends, including international students.

In 2019, David and Miriam moved back to the home farm near McIntosh, where they lived in a log home he built with the help of a friend, Paul. He is remembered for his servant spirit, hard work ethic, and helping others in matters of faith and life. His kindness and gentle ways have been acknowledged by many.
