William (‘Big’ Bill) John Lundquist was born on February 8, 1947, in Roseau, Minnesota, the son of William (Gordon) and Catherine (Kay) Lundquist. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseau. A proud graduate of Roseau High School, Class of 1965, Bill went on to serve his community through a 20-year career in law enforcement. He received his State Certification from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in 1969 and worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Roseau County and a Police Officer for the cities of Park River, ND, and McIntosh, MN.
On August 17, 1975, Bill married Carolyn Engen. While they later divorced, they shared many years together and raised their two children, Adam and Sarah, who remained the greatest joys of his life. In 1985, Bill began his second career with the United States Postal Service, working as a Rural Mail Carrier for the Mentor, Erskine, and McIntosh communities until his retirement.
‘Big’ Bill, as he was known to many, had a big personality to match his 6’10” (or as he would say, 5’22”) height - friendly, curious, and always ready to strike up a conversation with anyone. He was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, a lover of rock music, and a passionate cook who enjoyed healthy eating long before it was trendy. Bill loved gardening, classic and muscle cars, model trains, and the game of chess, which he always described as ‘easy to learn but difficult to master.’ Most of all, Bill loved people and getting to know them.
Bill passed away on Monday, June 23 at Valley Care and Rehab in Barnesville. He is survived by his children, Adam (Sarah) Lundquist - Hickson, ND and Sarah (Nathan) Thorsrud - West Fargo, ND; five grandchildren Aaliyah Jackson, Jocelyn Thorsrud, Simon Lundquist, Lillyana Thorsrud, and Miles Lundquist.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Kay.
