I worked with Dr. Berger at the Aberdeen single room hotel in mid Manhattan from 1975 until 1980. Here we tended to recently discharged psychiatric patients, providing them a home and a multitude of social services. Dr. Berger was a friend and mentor who loved everyone he worked with. I rotated with Dr. Berger for 6 weeks earlier this year. The first thing I noticed about him were his tennis shoes with argyle socks. I think these features explained a lot about the man. He was knowledgable about many things in life, genuinely concerned for humans, and had a great sense of humor. Dr Berger will be dearly missed. I loved his quick wit and his enigma smile. He enjoyed chatting about psychology and shared he had a daughter in law in the discipline. He was a mentor to many of our fellow psychiatry residents and his tenure earned him the respect of many colleagues those present and well as those retired.
