Dorothy Shaw Obituary

Dorothy May Shaw, 95, died Monday, June 16, 2014, at Havenwood Heritage Heights in Concord.
She was born at home in Bow on Oct. 29, 1918, to Rufus Herbert and Millie Abby (Hinkson) White.
For three years, she attended Bow Mills School, when it was a one-room schoolhouse, she attended the same school for five years when it became a two-room schoolhouse, which is now the town hall. She went on to attend Concord High School, graduating in 1936. She played varsity basketball there.
Dorothy graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1940. She was a home economics teacher from 1940 to 1942 at Epping High School. She then went on to teach home economics at the Tilton-Northfield High School. She was also assistant 4-H agent for Middlesex County in Concord, Mass., in 1946 and for Merrimack County from 1946 to 1948. She became a substitute teacher at Concord High School before working at Emerson School for preschoolers from 1967 to 1981.
On June 19, 1948, she married her husband John Powel Shaw. Family was very important to her and she was a gracious hostess for numerous gatherings, which often included the best sugar cookies ever baked.
Dorothy knitted more than 500 hats for newborns and sewed more than 100 quilts that she donated to charitable causes.
She was a member of a number of organizations, including the Madisses Circle-South Congregational Church, Concord Female Charitable Society, the Tuesday Branch for Lunch, Crestwood Quilt and Craft Club and the South Congregational Church.
Survivors include her children, Nancy Hunt and her husband William of Dover, and Richard Shaw and his wife Anita of Bow; three grandsons, Christopher Hunt and his wife Jess of Dover, Matthew Hunt of Dover, and Kyle Shaw and his wife Autumn; and two great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by husband John P. Shaw in 2001 and her sister Ruth Townsend of Lebanon.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord.
In lieu of flowers. memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
