I was a student at Shaler High School in the late 1950's. Glenn Berkheimer brought chemistry to life for me and I eventually pursued a very successful career as an industrial chemist. I'm forever grateful for his influence on my life.

I am saddened to learn this, and I extend my sympathies to Dolores and the family. Glenn was a great teacher and a good friend to me. I always enjoyed his classes at Aspinwall High School. He was the most enthusiastic and creative teacher I experienced anywhere. In my mind's eye, I still see the "dust explosion" demonstration, and I remember fondly the "Electrician's Holiday" he held right before Christmas featuring the Tesla coil and the old Ford spark coil. He even distilled a gallon of gasoline to demonstrate its various components. And, of course, there was the time that he demonstrated mechanical advantage by lowering a mountain climber student from the roof of the school. (It was pictured in the 1953 yearbook.) He was a great help to me when I studied for various scholarship tests. We stayed in touch via Christmas letters and e-mail until he and Dolores moved to the retirement village.

I have a warm feeling in my heart when I hear Glenn'a name. Without his help, I would not have achieved my goals of working with high school science teachers. His insight into teaching science was remarkable. I will miss him and his cheerful attitude. Please accept our thoughts and prayers as you continue to live without his presence. Clarence Suelter

Dr. Berkheimer taught with a twinkle in his eye. Watching him interact with my young son, a class of middle school kids, or a room full of K-12 science teachers, his aim was always the same - to get you thinking and that truely is the aim of a great teacher. Education and science will miss him, but the light shines on in all those he taught.

To Dr. Berkheimer's Family. Glen was an inspiration to me as an elementary science teacher. He encouraged me to pursue a master's degree and included me in many teacher workshops as an assistant. He even came to visit us when our son was born. Our son was fussing & crying when Glen arrived at our home. In just a few minutes, Glen carried him about comforting him & calming him down. I shall never forget his kindness & caring for children. God will take special care of him, I'm certain. My prayers are with the whole family & a special hug to his wife who was always so nice to me.

Forever young and together again! They are missed!

My thoughts and prayers are with you all, Glenda, Wendy and David and your families. My thoughts are also with Aunt Dee, my memories of both Aunt Dee and Uncle Glenn are always them together, from long ago picnics in Blue Knob on the farm, to visiting Michigan with Mom and Dad when I was 15. My Mom talked about her little brother Glenn with pride for all his accomplishments when he had such a humble beginning. I'm sure they are together now trading stories!! Peace be with you all through this difficult time.
