Hom Yem

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Hom Yem on Sunday, October 28, 2018, aged 93 by the traditional Chinese reckoning, peacefully and in the presence of his loving family at his home in Calgary, Alberta.

Hom was born on December 26, 1925 in the city of Fuzhou in Fujian province, China. In 1950, while a resident in Shanghai, he married Man Wai Fong, who remained his dearest companion to the end of his life. Together they departed China for Hong Kong in 1952 to settle and raise their family. In 1959, Hom embarked on a long and rewarding career as a chef and restaurateur in Germany, where he was proud to own and operate a series of Chinese restaurants throughout the country; sharing, with countless diners, the wide-ranging mastery of the culinary arts that his many descendants and guests of the family continued to enjoy and cherish well after his retirement in 1990. He immigrated to Canada with his wife in 1996 to join his children.

In addition to his devoted wife of 68 years, Wai Fong, Hom is survived by his daughters Eva (Po Kai), Tania (Ambrose) and Michelle (David); his son Rodney (Joty); and his son Ulrich along with his family. He is also fondly remembered by his grandchildren Keith, Georginia (Timon), Rex (Nicole), Nicholas, Benjamin, Christopher and Kimberley; as well as his great-grandchildren Heidi, Iola, Oriana and Evelyn. Hom was predeceased by his daughter Ching Wah in 1965.

A Funeral Service will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 9:30 a.m., with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions in Hom's name directly to the Covenant Foundation, with proceeds direct to his final residence of Holy Cross Manor.
