Howard Kaplan Obituary
A devoted physician, husband, and father, Dr. Howard B. Kaplan passed away on October 11, 2019, in the care of family and friends. He was 68 years old.
Howie was son of the late Lawrence Kaplan and Marjorie Kaplan (née Goldstein) of New York City. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Michigan, and he earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. A longtime resident of New Fairfield, Dr. Kaplan specialized in internal medicine and was the former medical director of Glen Hill Center, a local nursing home.
Dr. Kaplan was a frequent and active contributor to the local community. His love of baseball – he was an avid fan of the New York Yankees – led him to become a local baseball umpire for youth amateur leagues in the Greater Danbury area. In addition to his private medical practice, Dr. Kaplan provided volunteer medical and educational services, including on behalf of the homeless and other at-risk populations.
Howie's interests extended beyond the practice of medicine: he was an amateur photographer and could be found spending a good portion of his limited free time growing vegetables and flowers in his garden. Most of all, Howie is remembered for his generosity, dedication to his craft, and his love for his family and friends.
Howie is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen; his sons Jacob, Jonathan, and Gabriel; his sister Nancy; and his nephew Davin.
A service celebrating Howie's life will be held on Sunday, November 3, at Temple Beth Elohim at 1:30 p.m., 31 Mt. Ebo Rd. North, Brewster, NY. Internment will follow at King David Memorial Gardens in Putnam Valley, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
He will be sorely missed.

Dr.Kaplan was our family doctor. He was so down to earth and caring. Every time I traveled to Israel, I brought him something back and he so appreciated it. I remember his son was in a serious car accident and he said to me that the car mezuzah I got him helped protect his son. What a great man.

Howie was my practice neighbour, my doctor, confidant, friend, We both felt quite free to "walk next-door" whenever either of us needed to talk.
Doctors like Howard are few and far between and I really miss him.

Dr. Kaplan was my doctor from the time I moved to Connecticut in 1999 until he closed his practice. An Army brat growing up, I've had many physicians, but he was the one who stood out. He gave me excellent medical advice and contributed wise perspective when I had difficult personal problems. I was shocked that he had died, and my heart is warmed by all the positive testimonials to him here. Clearly he was a good man and loving father and husband--which is the best legacy one can leave.

My heart sank when I saw that Dr. Kaplan passed away. He was a great guy and I´ve missed having spirited conversations with him during office visits! When I learned he took time off from his practice to do volunteer work, it confirmed what I´d already thought of him.... Just a great human being. Although, no one´s perfect.... He did go to that "other school", and I to Ohio State! That was the only source of disagreement we had. He will be greatly missed! Rest easy, Dr. Kaplan.

Howie was one year ahead of me in medical residency in NYC. Clearly one of the best teachers I've ever had. He was very strict with me and I know that made me a better doctor. With a truly sick patient you wanted Howie next to you. I admire his directness now much more than I appreciated back then. Rest in peace, Howie.

Dr Kaplan was my Dr since I was in my early 20's when he diagnosed my diabetes, he helped me in the hardest time in my life, he helped me not give up! He pushed me to take care of myself understand diabetes and how to live with it, he made me strong and know that I could control my diabetes, always would give me the time I needed to listen to me and give me strength to deal with life, he helped my mother after she had stroke and helped me help her with understanding and guidance. I new Dr kaplan like family as he was to me, always talked about his family how proud he was of all his kids and his wife and how much he loved them, he was more than a Dr and a friend to me, helped me so much in my life, I can not say enough good things about Dr kaplan, he truly cared about his patients. God knows all the good that he did, and all his patients to. I know he use to say that I was patient so long and through so much I was like another son , I always have the most respect for him. He was the best, having a Dr that cares and tells you like it is and pushes you to take care of yourself, never give up on you. He was truly a great friend, counselor, Dr, motivator. Jesus bless him always and forever, he helped me a lot in my life.

I called on Dr. Kaplan as a pharmaceutical rep, but he became friend to me. He took it upon himself to help my infant son, who he never met, get help from his terrible eczema. He was nothing short of a brilliant, caring person and the consummate gentleman.

My dear friend and doc he was my family doc from i came to the states in 1989 until he closed his practice. He was kids doc he would order their vaccine and treat them. I am at a loss for words. He was my boss and my best friend. If I can make anybodys day better I can tell you that he lived for his family and his patients. He was a brilliant doctor. He unfortunately could not heal everybody, but he could certainly diagnose you and send you in the right direction. I went to high school with Howie. We were very good friends and had great times together. He excelled in everything he did and was very popular. Thoughts and prayers to all of Dr. Kaplan's family on the loss of a really good guy. He was a terrific doctor and I considered him a friend. I am thankful to have been under his care for many years as were my parents. We all thought the world of him. He helped me navigate a challenging health time that had my head spinning. He took charge, called in a few specialists and had answers for me pronto. I always felt he had my best interest in mind and for that I am especially grateful. Dr Kaplan was the man who saved my life with putting me on my insulin pump and as I wasnt so good at the diabetes thing he made me realize how much these pumps made life easier he could be mad at me in one sentence and then say you can do this and he was right ...Thanks to a great great man.

Doc Kaplan was a great man whom I came to know many, many years ago as a physician to me and my husband, then later, I came to know him as a coach on our sons' soccer team, and after that, he became a family friend.
