Julia Adie Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Julia Mildred (Farnham) Adie, loving wife and mother, died on October 31, 2017 in Williamsburg. She was 102 years old. Mrs. Adie was born August 31, 1915 in Hope, Kansas to Ernest N. and Katie (North) Farnham. She was the youngest of six children. She attended Kansas State University for three years, receiving a certificate to teach elementary grades. To obtain experience, she taught her first two years in a one room schoolhouse in Dickinson County, Kansas. She later taught in the Manchester and Burrton, Kansas school systems. She then moved to Washington, D.C. when she was offered a Civil Service position. She worked for the Army Map Service and other federal agencies. During World War II, she joined the American Red Cross as a hospital activities planner and worked at Billings General Hospital (Indianapolis, Indiana) and later at Fort Belvoir. It was at Fort Belvoir that she met Major John R. Adie. They were married in 1953 at the Chapel at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia. Shortly thereafter, she began a twenty year career as an Army spouse, with two tours in Germany and numerous assignments within the United States. She and her husband retired in Williamsburg in 1974, living in Queens Lake, Kingsmill and, most recently, Patriots Colony, a military retirement community. Mrs. Adie was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was particularly interested in her family, home and many close friends. For a number of years, she was an active member of This Century Gallery in Williamsburg. She always pursued her passion for painting and received many awards. Her husband, Col. (Ret.) John R. Adie predeceased her on August 2, 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Julie; son, Jack; daughter-in-law, Linda; three grandsons, Jackson, Dylan and Kyle Adie; and nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Nelsen Funeral Home, with a viewing/memorial service/refreshments at Nelsen's on November 4, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with burial later at Arlington National Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers who have provided such comfort and care over the years to Julia: Gloristine Evins; Chris Bado; Cheryl Otey; Elizabeth McCotter of Bayada; Shannon Salmons; Ashley Gibson; and the many aides and nurses at Patriots Colony. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice House of Williamsburg or The American Red Cross.
