This is a revised statement. I met Lucas in May of 1972 in Silver Spring, Maryland. He had just arrived in that State to work at the Goddard Space Center. We became friends immediately. During the early 1970's Lucas and I together engaged in Social Action events of interest to us. During the course of the past 42 years Lucas was always a faithful correspondent with me. I met Lucas in 1977 when he was a professor at Boston University in the Astronomy
Department, and I was an incoming freshman. In those early days I called him
Dr. Kamp! I found him to be an understated and self-effacing individual. I
recall his having written his own code to perform spectral analysis of
IUE data on a DECwriter terminal. This was definitely not any easy task.
He was a good influence and teacher on this impressionable young woman in
Astronomy. He was my...
