I first met Marlene at a 'sock hop' at St. Thomas College in September of 1959. How that happened is a story unto itself. But it was the start of my first true romance and for the next 18 months Marlene and I dated steady until we broke up toward the end of my sophmore year in the spring of 1961. Many a night I walked the two miles from my dorm room at St. Thomas to her house on Fairview Avenue adjacent to the St. Catherine's campus, some times at temperatures below zero. Her parents were...
