I first met Marlene at a 'sock hop' at St. Thomas College in September of 1959. How that happened is a story unto itself. But it was the start of my first true romance and for the next 18 months Marlene and I dated steady until we broke up toward the end of my sophmore year in the spring of 1961. Many a night I walked the two miles from my dorm room at St. Thomas to her house on Fairview Avenue adjacent to the St. Catherine's campus, some times at temperatures below zero. Her parents were awesome people and I loved them almost as much as i did my own parents. When we parted, it nearly broke my heart. The last time I saw Marlene was at a camp fire on the banks of the Mississippi River not far from St. Thomas in late May, 1961. The pain of our break up is long past and I hold only the fondest memories of the time we shared together. She was a very special person, not just to me, but to all her many freinds at Durham Hall High School. I was deeply saddened to learn of her passing and my prayers go out to her family.
