Max Hickerson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 19, 2017.
Max Reese Hickerson died on Thursday, May 18, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, three children, Deborah Cooper, Ronald Hickerson, and Sarah Shearer, and five grandchildren. He also precedes in death two siblings, Bonnie Lichtenberger and J. Kent Hickerson, and 4 nieces and nephews.

He was born on March 11, 1932 in Vandalia, Illinois to LaVonne and Ronald Hickerson. Max loved God's Word and loved to preach God's Word. After proclaiming his life's calling at age ten, he would later attend Lincoln Christian College and graduate from Ozark Bible College. As a student he served churches in Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. After graduation, he served as the senior minister of Christian churches in Illinois, Ohio, California, and Texas (Spring Branch Christian Church, Katy Christian Church, and First Christian Church of Houston). Described as the man with "a deep velvet voice," Max preached his first sermon in Longview, Illinois and titled it, A Long View of Longview. From then on he would be cherished for his catchy one-liners: A man is not what he thinks he is, but what he thinks, he is…Closed mouths don't gather feet…My wife is my great humilifier. Carolyn was his faithful wife for 65 years – staying at home with him every Saturday night as he readied for Sunday mornings, listening to him practice each sermon several times (for a total of over 8,500 times during their marriage). She watched him perform many baptisms and almost 3600 weddings; she traveled with him as he spoke at revivals, real-estate conventions and school commencement ceremonies. He preached numerous funeral sermons - often at Waltrip Funeral Home while he was minister at the neighboring Spring Branch Church. Max would also mentor 40 men – his "Timothies" – who now preach and minister at churches across the country. He retired in 2006 after which he continued to serve the Lord as a "Barnabas," encouraging the development of four new churches.

Max's energy was limitless. In the churches he served, Max led numerous construction and renovation projects. He enjoyed sports, playing pick-up softball as a youth in a neighborhood field in Oklahoma with Mickey Mantle. He played basketball in high school, winning the free throw trophy award two years in a row, and then moved on to college basketball. Max also enjoyed gardening and most recently was active in the West University Rotary Club. Yet for all the roles he had in the world – preacher, mentor, non-stop worker – none were treasured more by him than being a loving husband to his wife, father to his children, and grandfather to Jordan Hickerson, Ben Cooper, Hannah Shearer, Abigail Shearer, and David Hickerson.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Waltrip Funeral Directors 1415 Campbell Road, Houston, Texas at 2 p.m. with a reception following.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be sent to Houston Hospice at houstonhospice.org, Ozark Christian College at occ.edu, or the West U Rotary Club Foundation at wurcf.org.

Max was a huge influence in so many people's lives. I remember when Max and Carolyn took me to see a screening of Jurassic Park when it first came out. Additionally I was fortunate to have Max baptize me as a child and him and Carolyn set godly examples for all the youth at CCC My family and I have many fond memories of the Hickersons and Max will truly be missed!

Dear Carolyn, Deb, Ron, Sarah, and Families,

We share your sorrow in missing Max's presence here on earth, as we have so many happy memories of special times spent with him and you over the span of several years! Most importantly, many of those memories are of eternal significance because Max, with his genuine commitment to our Lord, lived out and modeled the life God desires for each one of us!

I remember especially Max's sharing of God's design and desire that we publicly profess our heartfelt faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior, repent of our sins that separate us from God, follow through with baptism, continue to study God's Word, and obey the instructions He has given for how he wants us to live for Him.

Because of Max's willingness to dedicate his life to sharing the Good News of salvation from the Bible, my dad understood his need to be baptized, and Max was the human instrument through whom God worked to accomplish this goal, as well as the baptizing of our own children.

We remember, too, how Max loved to sing with joy, reverence, and exuberance. I can imagine him worshiping and rejoicing right now during his memorial service, in union with the best choir ever and the most magnificent Director of All!

I wish we, and all the other members of our family, could be physically present today at this moment for Max's service, but since we can't, we are present in thought and prayer!

And, as Max would say at such a time as this, "If you always love the ones you've lost, you'll never lose the ones you love." We love all of you and Max, our friend, preacher, and fellow heir for eternity!

Love,
Lynn and Lawson

From the days in Thousand Oaks, including the green stamps and the rooster, and then again in Sunnyvale, it was a joy and pleasure to work with the Hickersons and get to know the family. Max was truly a man of God and enjoyed, and benefitted by, the partnering with Carolyn. It has been a pleasure and privilege to know them for over 50 years! Max is missed!

I was privileged to serve with Max at Community Christian Church in California. We developed a friendship that lasted until now. I hated to see him go, but understood that those grandchildren were calling him and Carolyn to Texas. I have fond memories of the years with Max as our pastor. We remember how Max sat with our son and went over the plan of Salvation. Thank you Max for your love and care for us. Rest peacefully in His care. Our love goes to Carolyn and the rest of the family, may God grant you peace.

Max was a lovely man who lived by the Biblical principals he preached. As a member of West U Rotary, he inspired us all to be generous and active in our service to others. We will miss him dearly.

Our pastor and friend for many many years......it isn't often that couples are able to stay close to the pastor who performed their marriage ceremony, but we have been blessed to stay in touch with Max and Carolyn wherever each of us was living, and that has been a number of places! Always faithful, always a great sense of humor, and always caring......a mentor to my brother Steve who went into the ministry, Max has meant so much to our entire family. We will miss his emails and occasional calls . So much love and sympathy to Carolyn, Ron, Deb and Sarah. A life well lived!
