Robert “Bob” Lawson

October 7, 1927-October 28, 2025

At the age of 98, in the comfort of his home with his loving wife, Robert “Bob” Lawson of Powell, Wyoming passed away, October 28, 2025.

Born October 7, 1927, in Concrete, North Dakota to Oliver M. Lawson and Clara L. (Lein) Lawson; he was the fourth of six children. Bob proudly served the United States Army from 1945 to 1947. Upon hearing about the Homestead Act in 1949, he put in for a plot of land and he was fortunate enough to draw, beginning a lifelong commitment to farming. He was the youngest homesteader to draw and the last to die which leaves a legacy, both for the Heart Mountain area and the State of Wyoming. He dedicated more than 45 years to working the land, raising his family and building a life rooted in hard work, resilience, and love. After he retired from farming, he helped his wife at the Airport Café in Cody and enjoyed chatting with all the locals and travelers who came in to eat.

In the spring of 1955, Bob met the love of his life, Idabell Stacey. The two were married on September 10, 1955, and shared 70 devoted years together. From their union, three sons were born: Matthew (Kim) Lawson of Powell, Wyoming, Terry (Lavell) Lawson of Englewood, Colorado, and Todd (Ursula) Lawson of Powell, Wyoming. Bob was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his three children as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who carry forward his spirit and legacy. His parents, one grandson and two great-grandchildren preceded him in death along with all five of Bob’s siblings and numerous friends and family.

In his younger years, he enjoyed working the land, skiing, deer and elk hunting, and on Sundays, he would go horseback riding. He also enjoyed sitting at Hank’s Café and the Skyline Café, visiting, as well as watching the 4th of July parade in Cody, WY. While he didn’t travel much, going back to North Dakota and looking at tractors was a highlight. He had a deep appreciation for the people in his life and for “all my good neighbors”.

Bob leaves behind a life story defined by family, dedication, and purpose in the simple but meaningful work of everyday living. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his sense of humor, and the deep love he held for his wife and his family. He used to chuckle and say, “By God, Heart Mountain is the best place on Earth.”

The funeral will be held on November 5th, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Powell, Wyoming. Following the funeral, there will be an Honor Guard Ceremony at Crown Hill Cemetery.
